How to Register a Greyhound

This fact sheet tells you the correct procedure for registering your greyhound with the Greyhound Board of Great Britain. If you need more information or have any queries you should write to us at GBGB.

Required Documents:

Stud Book (Irish Coursing Club or Greyhound Stud Book)

The Stud Book registration must be in the name of the owner(s) who wish to register the greyhound. If it is not, then a transfer of ownership form is required to be completed and signed by both the previous and new owners. In the case of the Greyhound Stud Book (British-bred greyhounds), you must complete the transfer of ownership paperwork before you can register your greyhound with the GBGB.

In the case of the Irish Coursing Club, an ICC transfer of ownership form is required. It is important that the greyhound's previous owner completes and signs on the right hand side of the transfer form. Details for the new owner to complete and sign are contained on the left part of the form. The GBGB have an agreement to register changes of ownership on the ICC's behalf and do not charge any additional fees for this service.

GBGB Registration Certificate
You can get this from your local GBGB licensed racecourse. The form must be completed in every detail and then signed by each owner in the spaces provided. Owners that have not previously registered greyhounds with the GBGB are required to provide proof of identity and address. Please read the front of the Registration Certficate for further details. The Racing Manager will complete the diagrams on the reverse of the form for you.

Inoculation Certificate
Every greyhound must be fully vaccinated against
  • Distemper
  • Viral hepatitis
  • Leptospira canicola
  • Leptospira icterihaemorrhagiae
  • Parvovirus
Inoculation is normally administered at eight weeks with second doses at twelve weeks. Thereafter, booster inoculations are required at 12 monthly intervals from the date of the initial puppy inoculation.

Please see the GBGB Rule book, rules 60 and 197 for further information.
