GBGB is the official regulator for greyhound racecourses in Great Britain, with 21 licensed tracks from Newcastle to Brighton and Hove.

We are responsible for ensuring these racecourses comply with the Rules of Racing, so that we can all be confident each race at a GBGB registered track is fairly run.

Tracks pay annual licence fees which go towards maintaining these high levels of integrity as well as supporting our welfare commitments in line with our Greyhound Commitment.

Applying for a licence

Applications are welcome from racecourses wishing to be licensed in Britain, subject to a £500 administration fee. Applicants should download and complete our New Racecourse Application, returning it to GBGB’s Director of Regulation via post.

Once your application is received we will undertake further background checks on the information that you have supplied and may write to you for clarification on matters where we require further information. We will also arrange for a site visit to take place in order to assess whether your Greyhound Stadium meets the Standards required by the GBGB. We will endeavour to process your application as speedily as possible but this will depend upon you supplying correct and up-to-date information.

For more detail on the process, or to begin your application, please download the application documents. These documents are also appropriate for racecourse applications where a previous licence has been terminated or revoked, or where a racecourse has ceased to trade.

Notifying us of a change in circumstance

Racecourse licences are issued subject to the terms and conditions that:
a. the Racecourse Executive adheres to the Rules of Racing and any conditions of licence as may be made and communicated by GBGB from time to time;
b. GBGB is notified, via the Director of Regulation, of any material change in the management of the racecourse.

Racecourse Certification Inspections

As part of GBGB’s racecourse licensing process, it is necessary for us to conduct regular surveillance inspections and a full annual certification inspection to ensure licensed racecourses continue to comply with the relevant Rules of Racing. These are carried out by GBGB Stipendiary Stewards and reviewed by the Senior Stipendiary Steward.
