Nottingham British Breeders Stakes - Nottingham 500m (£8,000)

Damson Jam took the first semi-final in style for Jim Hayton. The son of Droopys Scolari showed good early-pace and quickly hit the front. In the blink of an eye this smart greyhound quickly raced 5L clear and his place in next week's final was never in doubt. It's a testing 500m at Nottingham and although defeat was never on the cards, Dannythechampion had reduced the deficit to 1.5L at the line with Fabulous Milan qualifying in third a further 3.75L back in 29.74 +50.

The first semi-final was brilliant but few could have anticipated just how special the second semi-final would be. It was all about Eden The Kid who rocketed out of the traps recording a 5.03 sectional. Once he had turned in front it was always going to be a race against the clock. He powered over the line a huge 5L in front of Fabulous Expert with Honest John qualifying in third a further 2.75L back in 29.23 +50. This was an outstanding time and only 7 spots off the 29.16 track-record set in 2012 by the great Sawpit Sensation.

Final 27/10/15 (Sky Sports)

There is much talk about British Breeding at the moment and the dilemma is how do you encourage more people to breed? That is the million dollar question and it would probably take a million pound investment to pull it off. This stake is just one example of the quality of British Bred greyhounds. Eden The Kid finished third in the £250,000 to-the-winner Derby and set a new track-record during that competition. 2014 was a vintage year Salad Dodger won the Derby, King Dec the Arc and King Kane the TV Trophy being three particular highlights. Make no mistake about it British Breeders are right up there with the best in the world. In recent years Australia have had Brett Lee, Ireland have had College Causeway and the UK have had Westmead Hawk. Three amazing champions and a credit to their connections and country but Westmead Hawk stands right at the top of the pile across the world for me.

Eden The Kid is a son of the great Westmead Hawk and he is flying the flag superbly. He was magical in the heats and once again in the semi-finals. If he gets it right again at the boxes and the going is similar, then he may not only land this valuable stake he could even break the track-record.

The remaining five finalists look to have a mountain to climb to compete with the superstar Eden The Kid but this is greyhound racing, it's not the most exciting sport in the world for nothing and on the night anything can happen. Damson Jam was 51 spots behind in the semi-finals but he showed great pace to the third-bend and he is a dog that could certainly match Eden The Kid early doors. Dave Firmager has two chances with his highly rated bitches Fabulous Expert and Milan. The former is of course the Swindon Produce Stakes champion and she showed when winning that £15,000 to-the-winner stake that she is a class act. Dannythechampion and Honest John are running fantastically well and are here very much on merit.

Will Eden The Kid win the £10,000? Will he break the track-record? Or could we be about to witness a major upset? It is certainly exciting and set to be a terrific race that really will show the world British Breeding may be low on numbers but we have quality!

Jim Hayton On Damson Jam

"Let's be honest if nothing goes wrong we are running for second place behind Eden The Kid. This is dog racing though and everyone knows things can and do go wrong. Once you put them in the traps there is nothing you can do. We are delighted to make the final and he showed brilliant pace but the 500m stretches him to the limit. He's a fast dog and dipped under 16.00 at Sheffield which is no mean feat. We have it all to do to beat Eden The Kid who I rate highly, he looks to be a very good dog.

I'm doing all I can to support British Breeding and I currently have twenty British Bred pups with sixteen of them are about to start schooling. We all have to support breeding in this country for it to survive and encourage people to breed. Stakes like this are so important but we need to make them bigger and more of them".
