There were plenty of shocks in the opening round and they kept on coming in the semi-finals. Eden The Kid and Coolavanny Jap both crashed out of their respective semi-finals but Ballymac Mossjoe, Swift Carter and Blackstone Marco all shined brightly on an exciting night of action at Nottingham.

Ballymac Mossjoe is a super talent when he gets it right at the boxes. The reigning Sussex Cup Champion took a flier from the traps in the first semi-final. He recorded a 5.00 sectional and easily made the bend in front. From there the opposition faced an uphill battle and it was the Caffreys Puppy Champion Crossfield Cesar who gave him the most to think about. At the line Barrie Draper's charge still had 2.5L in hand over Crossfield Cesar and he stopped the clock in a very fast 29.52 +20.

In the second semi-final all eyes were on Eden The Kid, the recent winner of the British Breeders' Stakes over course and distance. He was slowly in to stride and then met plenty of trouble and he would crash out in third. Express Master was fast away and out in front he looked all over a qualifier until Swift Carter threw down his challenge at the third-bend, Express Master was baulked and with it went his chance. Swift Carter would go on to score comfortably by 3.25L from Pinpoint Boom in 29.94 + 20. Pinpoint Boom was crowded on the run up and then again at the second-bend and was eye catching in holding off Eden The Kid.

Do It For Twiggy and Blackstone Marco lit up the first-round with exceptional performances. They served up another cracker here in the third semi-final. It was Heather Dimmock's Blackstone Marco who flew from the boxes recording a scintillating 4.96 sectional compared to the 5.09 from Do It For Twiggy. It was race on but Blackstone Marco had put himself in pole position with that excellent start and would not be denied. They both once more emerge with huge credit but the night belonged to Blackstone Marco who crossed the line 1.25L in front of the East-Anglian and Kent Derby champion in 29.62 +20.

Final Tuesday, November 24th

The final looks to be an outstanding race to enjoy for greyhound fans. Do It For Twiggy is chasing his third major title after winning the East Anglian Derby and Kent Derby. What a year that would be for him and would surely put him in the reckoning for honours at the GBGB Awards ceremony in January.

Ballymac Mossjoe is chasing his second major title for Barrie Draper after winning the Sussex Cup and he was tremendous in his semi-final victory. When he gets it right at the boxes he's right up there with the best in the country.

Crossfield Cesar looks to have made the transition from puppy to open age with ease. He enjoyed his biggest night of his career over this course and distance when landing the Caffreys Puppy Classic earlier in the year. It would be remarkable if he was to add the Eclipse trophy to go with it, he's well drawn and his connections will be hopeful.

Blackstone Marco seems to have come alive during this competition and he's a major player for Heather Dimmock. He followed up his brilliant display in the first-round with another in the semi-final and drawn in red in the final he could be celebrating turning a veteran next month in style.

Swift Carter caused a huge shock in the semi-finals but make no mistake he's a very good dog. He mixed it with the best in the puppy stages and now he's doing that in open age.

Pinpoint Boom is very interesting he's only had two runs for Kelly Macari and finds himself in a category one final. He's bred very well but to be totally honest I don't know much about him so I thought I'd catch up with Kelly Macari and get the low-down on her new star.

Kelly Macari on Pinpoint Boom

“Really pleased he's made the final and I thought he ran a cracker in the semi-final to qualify after trouble. I've not had him long but he's settling in nicely and anything could happen in the final if he got a run. He's not come away yet but he is very game and he is powering home. We will be an outsider but you never know I think there is more to come from this dog and he looks to be a very nice prospect. We already have one Eclipse trophy from a few years ago when Mill Bling Bling won it and it would be really nice to have another”.
