Roxholme Dream runs in division two of the William Hill Derby Trial Stakes at Wimbledon on Saturday Night




With the start of the £250,000 to the winner William Hill Derby now just about six weeks away, several potential contenders will start their preparation at Wimbledon this weekend in three high quality Derby Trial Stakes.


Irish raider Graham Holland sends three greyhounds over; Millbank Stevie, Riverside Pat and Shelbourne Easter Cup winner Sidarian Blaze. Hayley Keightley has three runners; St Leger winner and Bitch and Stayer of the Year Roxholme Dream, Roxholme Ted, a Derby quarter finalist last year and On Alert, who has won three from five starts at the Don.


Several greyhounds with Derby aspirations trialled at the track on Wednesday. Charlie Lister OBE trained Cribb was the fastest over the 480 course, recording 28.59 (normal) despite stumbling at the start and posting a 5.08 sectional. Lister’s Iceman Frank also trialled over the Derby trip, recording 28.76 (4.78).


Irish handler Paul Hennessey took three of his classic prospects for a look at the Plough Lane track , with Barefoot Artist completing the sprint course of 273 metres in 16.18, Hennessy’s Killara Hey Mac went round with his Budgie Bypass with the former prevailing by a length and three quarters in 16.39. Hennessey says he may bringing up to eight dogs over for the classic. Fastest of the sprint trialists was John Boy Geddis’ Be Up Front with a time of 16.15. Lister’s 2013 Derby champion Sidaz Jack clocked 16.43.


Meanwhile, at Belle Vue on Wednesday Ian Aylward trained Baliff Hubert won the second William Hill Derby Win and You’re In Trial Stake, landing a £2,000 prize and free entry to the Derby. The first of these races was run at Sheffield last Tuesday and won by Jim Hayton’s Viking Jack. There are further Win and You’re In Trial stakes at Perry Bar on April 21st and Towcester on May 9th. There are also two in Ireland; Shelbourne Park on April 25th and Cork on May 2nd.


The draw for the first round of the William Hill Derby takes place on Sunday May 24th with the first round commencing on Thursday 28th or Wednesday 27th if oversubscribed. The final is live on Sky on Saturday June 27th.
