Who's In Pole Position For Sunderland Grand Prix

The William Hill Grand Prix moves to the semi-final stage on Saturday and it's going to be some battle to see who fills the final six places. Farley Rio last year's champion is still in the competition and he was brilliant in the heats. He must be on his toes though in the third semi-final because it's a cracker and see's top four-bend bitch Jaytee China, reigning The Great North Run champion Airmount Paco, highly rated duo of Jimmy Nailed On and Lowgate Jasper with Blackhouse Heidi making up the field. The latter was eye catching in the heats after hitting the rail at the corner and she's finished runner-up twice in The Great North Run. I decided to catch up with her trainer Harry Williams ahead of this sensational semi-final.

Harry Williams on Blackhouse Heidi

'This competition is normally won by a top-class middle distance greyhound who stays, it would be a touch sharp for her but she will be finishing strong. I was delighted with her run in the heats, the inside was dead and she must have hit some false ground or something that caused her to hit the rails. I'm happy with the draw and if the tracks a level playing field I think she will run a big race. This competition is probably in truth about a couple of weeks earlier for us than ideal but should she make the final then she'd have a big chance. She's coming right from her season in fact she was mated to Vans Escalade but missed so she's back racing. There's nothing set in stone and I'd have to speak with Stuart Ray but possibly The Great North Run at Newcastle would be her swansong competition having finished runner-up the last two years behind Farloe Tango and Airmount Paco. I've only got four greyhounds racing now and I'm enjoying it very much'.

The other two semi-finals are also brilliant; see last year's runner-up Bubbly Gold go in the first. Can he make the final two years running? The excitement is not over there because in the second semi-final it see's Teejayspowerhawk go to traps. Can he repeat that marvellous victory in the heats which saw him clock 39.33? Paul Young was on fire in the first-round having a qualifier in each of the six heats. He's represented in each of the three semi-finals, how many will he get to the final?
