First-Round Report

Storm And Twilight Go Quickest

The £10,000 to-the-winner Lowther Stakes started with a real bang at Towcester. Derby Plate heroine Domino Storm went in the first-heat for champion trainer Mark Wallis. It was a sensational performance from this daughter of Makeshift, she posted a slick 4.09 sectional on her way to a 5.25L victory in the joint fastest time of 27.85.

Forest Twilight took her impressive record to six victories from seven starts for Hayley Keightley. She was equally impressive recording a 4.12 sectional and was the runaway winner by 6.25L in exactly the same time of 27.85.

Irish puppy sensation Droopys Streak had to settle for third after stumbling badly at the start. She comes out of the race with massive credit and trainer Frazer Black will surely have breathed a huge sigh of relief. The Irish Oaks third owned by race sponsor Mark Lowther showed incredible pace to qualify behind Jaytee Firefly and heat winner Queen Asia in 28.10. It was more straightforward for the Mark Lowther owned, Derek Law trained Coolavanny Slip in heat-four. She made her UK debut a winning one posting 28.25. The Mark Wallis trained duo Evanta Evita and Aero Babooshka battled it out in heat-five with the former coming out on top by 0.5L in 28.36. Farloe Lara caused a minor upset in the final heat beating Hiphip Who Razor 4.5L with 2014 bitch of the year Roxholme Dream a further neck back in third in 28.10.

What a start to this new exciting competition. The first-round belongs to Domino Storm and Forest Twilight but probably Droopys Streak supporters if not the happiest are definitely the most relieved.

Mark Wallis On Domino Storm

'Mark Lowther's sponsorship is fantastic and he was rewarded with a cracking entry, a good crowd and a great atmosphere. Domino Storm trapped out and the race was over in a matter of strides. She's running very well and if she keeps performing like this she's going to have a great chance of winning this competition. I'd say she's our best chance but Evanta Evita will come on for the run and Aero Babooshka ran really well. Deanridge Angel did well to qualify behind Hayley Keightley's Forest Twilight who was very impressive and looks the main danger. It's going to be exciting heading to the semi-finals and hopefully we can be represented down the line in the final.

Domino Storm all being well will miss the Brighton Belle and go straight to the Champion Stakes at Romford over 575m after this competition. I think she will be sensational over that distance'.
