The Coral Champion Stakes - Romford 575m (£10,000) -

Opposition Not A Patch On Champion Kerry

The 2015 Coral Champion Stakes worth £10,000 to-the-winner was won in style by Patchys Kerry for owner Frank Taylor and trainer Mark Wallis. All the talk in the build up to the race was about Adageo Bob and Jet Stream Sound but after the race greyhound fans could only talk about Patchys Kerry. This daughter of Blackstone Gene outshone her rivals and delivered when it reality mattered. This fantastic victory gave Mark Wallis his second Champion Stakes victory after Eye Onthe Veto had previously won it in 2007.

You could feel the anticipation in the crowd as soon as the hare started to move. The lids pinged open and favourite Jet Stream Sound badly missed the kick, Adageo Bob was slowly in to stride but Franks Dream was out like a bullet. Franks Dream turned the bend in front, hot on her tail was Teejays Panther with Patchys Kerry in third. Out the back Adageo Bob, Jaytee Berlin and Jet Stream Sound did each other no favours and it would take a Herculean effort for any of them to win from there.

Franks Dream was brave out in front; she fought off the challenge from Teejays Panther and turning the fourth-bend Patchys Kerry moved in to second and Adageo Bob was incredibly starting to move up and throw down his challenge. Franks Dream was game and she tried with everything she's got to hold off Patchys Kerry but in the end she had to succumb to the powerful finishing kick of the one dog who got up to win by 0.75L in 35.58.

It was a powerful display from the winner but the runner-up Franks Dream deserves huge credit and Adageo Bob ran a big race to finish third. I've a feeling we most certainly have not heard the last from Patchys Kerry who could become one of the top stayers in the country. It leaves the burning question will the great Adageo Bob ever win a major race at Romford? He's been a superstar of the 575m distance for some time now but to date that big Romford prize his fans crave eludes him. Jet Stream Sound got it all wrong in the final but he was superb in his heat and semi-final and he gives you the feeling he will shine brightly once more. Teejays Panther and Jaytee Berlin deserve a lot of credit for reaching this final as there was a lot of top-class entries but they made the final six.

Mark Wallis on Patchys Kerry and Adageo Bob

"It's really difficult when you have two in the race you want them both to win for connections, you end up with one happy and one not happy. We try our best and I thought they both ran very well. It's great to win the Champion Stakes, we've done well in the Essex Vase but until last night we'd only won the Champion Stakes once before in 2007 with Eye Onthe Veto.

Patchys Kerry is due in season anytime now and I don't envisage her being busy this year, perhaps something at the end of the year. We are in no rush with her and I think she will be an exciting stayer next year.

Adageo Bob ran a brave race. He got tangled up once or twice and it put paid to his chances. He's not been at his sparkling best and maybe age is catching up with him. He will have a nice break now and we will have a crack at the Essex Vase later in the year. Nick Savva likes him and he's already spoken about using him for a mating. After his career hopefully he can have an exciting stud career".

Supporting Card

Away from the big race the performance of the night must surely go to Jolly Vegas. In the £1,000 to-the-winner Like Coral On Facebook Bitches Final, she ran riot winning by 4.5L in a very fast 23.81. Her record now reads 8 UK starts with 4 victories but more importantly she is 3 from 3 at Romford.

Droopys Story set tongues wagging with a brilliant display of early-pace in the Sign Up For Coral Connect Puppy Final also worth £1,000 to-the-winner. Paul Young's greyhound is only a February 2014 whelp and looks a greyhound to be very excited about. He won by 2L in 24.00 to take his record to 3 victories from only 4 starts.

There was impressive performances by Jolly Ranger, scoring in 24.02, Clondoty Alex in 24.07, Airtech Louise over 575m in 36.01 and Droopys Tamera in the marathon over 750m, who posted a very fast 46.68.
