GBGB Top Dog October 2016

The GBGB Trainer of the Year Championship uses a points system and we have often wondered how individual greyhounds would score. So for a bit of fun we asked our stats guru to tell us and the results are quite illuminating.

The table below shows the top twenty open race greyhounds for October ranked by the same points scoring system as for the Trainer of the Year Championship. Lenson Santi and Kildallon Bolt share top spot by virtue of winning Category One competitions (RPGTV Henlow Derby and William Hill Northern Puppy Derby) unbeaten and each also landing a minor open race worth £500. Oscar Whisky landed the Category One All England Cup, but was beaten into second place in the first round, while Badabing did the same in the British Breeders Stakes at Nottingham.

Ballymac Manix and Bubbly Bluebird also won Category One competitions, the Grand National and the Kent Derby respectively, but only the finals took place in October so they only received 50 points.

The October performances of Kildallon Bolt, Oscar Whisky, Badabing and Ballymac Manix have propelled them all into the overall standings for the year to date, shown the second table below.

With the exception of Droopys Roddick in ninth place, all the greyhounds in the top ten for the year to date have won at least one Category One competition. Droopys Roddick’s second place in the William Hill Derby earned him 75 points and his semi-final victory another 25 points. In winning the Derby, Jaytee Jet earned 100 points, but his first and third round heat victories were only worth 5 points each.

Bubbly Bluebird tops the table, having won two Category One competitions, as has Patchys Kerry. However, Bubbly Bluebird has the better record in reaching those Category One competition finals as he was unbeaten whereas Patchys Kerry was defeated in the first round of the Sheffield Three Steps to Victory. Bubbly Bluebird also picked up 20 points when winning the Category Two Coral Puppy Trophy at Hove.

With four Category One competitions still to be won this year, it is still wide open as to which Greyhound will emerge 2016 highest points scorer. Although Bubbly Bluebird is probably favourite for that honour, there are three top twenty greyhounds in the William Hill St Leger semi-finals. The Betfred Eclipse at Nottingham, the Coral Essex Vase and the RPGTV Oaks at Belle View offer plenty of opportunity for more points to be scored.
