In terms of the rich history of UK greyhound racing, the Coral Golden Sprint is relatively young, having first been run in 1987. It may be young, but it is very special and one of the most exciting competitions of the year. Blonde Snapper took this competition in 2012, he subsequently went on to win the Derby. So all eyes will be on this year's competition to try and gain some valuable Derby clues. Only one greyhound Kinda Magic, has ever managed to successfully defend the title. He achieved this magnificent feat in 2001/2002, others have come close including Lough Messi, the 2014 champion, he made the final last year but could only manage 6th. Can last year's heroine You Never Listen manage to pull it off?

HEATS 04/03/16 (going +20)

You have to cast your mind all the way back to 1997 for the last time Charlie Lister OBE won this great race. He got his 2016 bid off in some style, when his Bigmans Kid ran away with the first heat. He was ultra-impressive winning by 4 and 1/2 lengths, in 23.74.

One of the big questions was how would the defending champion You Never Listen be after coming into season on December 28th 2015. She answered that in style winning heat-two, in 24.11. There may have been quicker times posted on the night, but this was a wonderful training performance by Jim Reynolds.

Express Master, made all to win heat-three, in 24.06, to send the Monmore raiding party home happy.

Belleview Soviet put in a very solid performance taking heat-four for Richard Joyce. He posted a winning time of 24.21.

In heat-five we witnessed something very special by the reigning National Sprint Champion, Scolari Sound. Sensationally his kennel mate Laughing Gravy chased him home on that occasion and he was runner-up again here, losing out by 1 and 3/4 lengths, in a flying 23.71. David Pruhs looks to have two outstanding greyhounds, both of whom now head to the semi-finals.

You could have been forgiven for thinking we had witnessed the performance of the night in heat-five. Arguably though the performance from Pass To Go, in heat-six if not toppling it, certainly equalled it. He ran out a 6 and 1/2 length winner, in exactly the same time 23.71.

Semi-Finals 11/03/16

What a competition and what a night this is set to be with three semi-finals. The first semi-final comes in to the category of being out of this world. We have defending champion You Never Listen, one of the best 400m greyhounds to have graced Romford in recent times Laughing Gravy and Charlie Lister OBE trained star Bigmans Kid. The others are fantastic greyhounds to boot and this has got all the ingredients of being a very special race indeed. The break from the boxes is going to be crucial, the only thing that can be guaranteed is greyhound fans are set to be wowed.

Belleview Soviet is the only heat winner in the second semi-final, however this looks to be a wide open affair. All six sets of connections will see their greyhounds heading to the traps, with a realistic chance of qualifying for the final.

Scolari Sound and Pass To Go are the headline acts of the third semi-final, both really impressed in the heats and both posted the exact same calculated time, 23.91. Droopys Story though is a talented dog, he got not luck in the heats and connections will be hoping he can grab a qualifying slot.

It's got all the ingredients of being a very special night indeed. You can watch the action unfold courtesy of RPGTV.

“We went forward with the plan of bringing her back from her season, under the remit if at any time we was not happy, we would have pulled out. She galloped impressively, her sprint trial was brilliant, her 400m trial was ok, so we decided to let her take her chance and defend her title. Bitches are individuals, there are no hard and fast rules, you must treat them on merit when it comes to seasonal breaks. We never pushed her hard or took any liberties.

Romford was made for this bitch, she absolutely loves the place. In the past she's shown us she comes back well from a break. If I'm being totally honest, we would have been over the moon to finish third in the heats. She is open to massive improvement, if she can just qualify now in the semi-final, she will be a live candidate in the final. I'm very happy with the draw, I think her best boxes are two or three. When she is in trap-one she does take a stride to her right”

“It's very exciting to be in with a chance of defending this title, but we have one eye already on breeding. If you had a wish list for temperament requirements, this bitch ticks all the boxes. She is fantastically bred and I think she will be a huge hit in the breeding paddocks. We will mate her the next time she comes in season.”
