Winker Harold is Greyhound Media Group 2016 Graded Greyhound of the Year

Peterborough’s Winker Harold is the Greyhound Media Group 2016 Graded Greyhound of the Year. Owned by Cary Grother, who also owns the sprinter Laughing Gravy, Winker Harold started the year by winning an A8 on 15th January 2016, following his maiden victory in the grade below at the end of 2015, and finished it by winning an S1 on 30th December.

He then progressed though the grades, winning 15 races in total competing over both four and six bends in the highest grade and picking up an Open victory over Peterborough’s 620 metres.

“He’s a cracking dog”, said trainer David Pruhs. “He was a bit stand offish and stubborn when we first started trialling him but now he is a perfect gentleman of a dog. He is a perfectly built greyhound and, at around 34 kilos, is sturdy enough without being too heavy.”

“He’s got good early and just about stays six bends,” Pruhs continued. “He’s picked up points for Peterborough in heats of the BAGS/Track Championship, representing us in the finals at Perry Barr.”

GBGB Media and Communications Officer Simon Banks said Winker Harold faced tough competition for the award; “It was a strong entry this year and some of the greyhounds were consistently competing in A1s and Opens. Some of other nominations were reliable, loyal servants who put in consistent performances week after week. The thing about Winker Harold, though, was the way he steadily went through the grades over the course of the year, starting with a victory in an A8 and rounding out the year landing an S1. He must be a pleasure to own.”

Winker Harold’s connections will receive his award for their pride and joy at the GBGB Greyhound of the Year Awards at the Brewery, London on 29th January.
