Who will be named as RPGTV 2016 Stayer of the Year

Yesterday we previewed the Sprinter of the Year, where three of the top five rated, by Trainer of the Year Championship points, failed to secure a nomination. Today we turn our attention to the Stayers and this time the GWA has nominated the three greyhounds who secured the most points.

Ladbrokes Summer Classic and William Hill St Leger winner Ferryforth Fran’s achievement in winning two Category One finals was rewarded with 100 points and help place him at the top of the table.

As well as winning the Coral Regency, Billys Bullet qualified for two other Category One Finals; the St Leger at Wimbledon and the Yorkshire version at Doncaster. That record trumped Rubys Rascal, who also won a Category One; beating Billys Bullet in Yorkshire St Leger at Doncaster, but only reaching one other Category One final; the Wimbledon St Leger.

Last year’s St Leger winner Fizzypop Buddy finished just two points ahead of third placed Rubys Rascal, thanks to reaching the finals of the Regency and the St Leger and 10 race wins, but 36 points ahead of fifth placed Pinpoint Boom.

Pinpoint Boom (Sunderland Grand Prix), is one of five other Category One winners who didn’t score as highly as the leading four because they didn’t have many other wins over the staying trip. Patchys Kerry only had three runs over the staying distance; all winning ones as she went through the Golden Jacket unbeaten. Bubbly Torpedo won twice over Romford’s 400m before stepping up to six bends and eventually landing the Essex Vase. Yahoo Victor won a Maiden Open at Crayford before landing the Gold Collar there, but his other five victories were in graded contests. Similarly, Ascot Woodie didn’t step up in distance until August when he won the Champion Stakes.

The nominations for the staying category are dominated by the William Hill St Leger and last year’s winner and this year’s second Fizzypop Buddy can perhaps count himself unlucky that he hasn’t been nominated this year, but the fact he didn’t actually win a Category One competition was probably decisive.
