Coral 2016 Hurdler of the Year

The hurdles division has the smallest number of greyhounds of any of the categories from which the Greyhound of the Year is drawn with just 82 greyhounds competing in Open hurdles races in 2016. That compares with 1,067 sprinters, 270, marathon dogs, 1,575 stayers and 3,123 greyhounds that competed over standard distances. Just because it is a small field, it doesn’t mean it is any easier to win, however, and the greyhounds at the top of table have been great performers.

With just one Category One competition, the Grand National and one Category Two, the Springbok, it is to be expected that the winner of those two competitions will be towards the top of the table and it is no surprise that Ballymac Manix tops the table, having won both.

Having won the two major competitions in the division it could be reasonable to expect Ballymac Manix to top the table by some distance and the fact that he is only thirteen points ahead of the second placed Razdazl Raidio is down to the tireless campaign waged by trainer Ricky Holloway over the whole year.

Razldazl Raidio won the Champions Hurdle at Wimbledon, but that competition is only a Category Three so only earned him 10 points, but it was the 20 minor Open wins that made up most of the points. As well as winning more races than any other hurdler, Razldazl Raidio also ran in more races, going to traps 29 times. Add in the fact that he also broke four track records and it is easy see why the GWA are struggling to pick the winner of the Coral 2016 Hurdler of the Year Award.
