Who will be the William Hill 2016 Standard Distance Performer of the Year?

With 3,123 greyhounds competing in Open races over the standard four bend trip in 2016, the winner pf the William Hill award will be a truly exceptional dog, a label that can certainly be applied to all three of the GWA nominees.

Jaytee Jet won the 2016 William Hill Derby, the last to be run at Wimbledon, and all of his points in the table below came from his three wins in that competition, which scores double the points of all the other Category One competitions. Perhaps, had he competed in more races in Britain, he would have finished higher than sixth in the table.

The top two in the table, Bubbly Bluebird and Droopys Buick, are also nominated and the GWA will find it hard to separate them. There are only four points between them in the table and both have won two Category One finals; Droopys Buick the Olympic at Hove and the Nottingham Eclipse, Bubbly Bluebird the Nottingham Puppy Classic and the Kent Derby at Sittingbourne. Injury forced Droopys Buick out of the Derby, while Bubbly Bluebird’s achievements are remarkable considering he didn’t start racing until the end of June.

The top of table also provides nominees for other Awards categories. Third placed Domino Storm is nominated for Bitch of the Year, an Award she won last year, while Kildallon Bolt in fifth place is nominated for the Newcomer of the Year Award, as is Bubbly Bluebird. Eighth placed Badabing is nominated for Best British Bred.

On Wednesday we will be publishing the standings for the leading Open race greyhounds by points for the month of January and updating them throughout the year.
