Bresmed Northern Sprint - Sheffield 280M - £8,000

THE SCENE is set for a thrilling Bresmed Northern Sprint Final at Sheffield on Tuesday with Hiya Butt the expected favourite after a thrilling performance at the semi-final stage from Hayley Keightley’s fabulously fast tracker.

This £8,000 Category One over 280 metres has been chosen by his experienced connections as the perfect reintroduction to racing for the son of Hondo Black who, until the start of this event, had been off the track since landing the Laurels on December 14.

Hiya Butt, who led everywhere bar the line when a close-up third in the final of the English Derby at Wimbledon in the summer, is drawn in trap three and, although a starting position is next to the fence is preferred for the early-paced black, the white jacket ought not prove too problematic.

A fast-start will undoubtedly put Hiya Butt in the driving seat and the others will face an uphill task to wrest the lead from him if that is the case.

Forest Natalee (trap five) is a member of that tremendously prolific May ’15 Ballymac Vic – Droopys Danneel litter and she is probably the best placed to chase Hiya Butt home.

Trained by Kevin Hutton who won this event Glenanore Ace last year, Forest Natalee defeated Hiya Butt at the first round stage and then followed him home in the semi-finals. She is in good form and merits respect.

Brynoffa Jasmin (trap six) represents the all-conquering Mark Wallis kennel. The precocious May’15 whelp hasn’t been with the Champion Trainer long but she has already won half of her 10 races and is clearly open to some improvement.

Mashmad Eyebrows (trap one) is another trained by Hutton. She hasn’t been at her best recently but has plenty of ability and is drawn in trap one which ought to help her cause.

The Jean Liles-trained Trapstyle Jet (trap two) has been running well without winning and is unlikely to be too far away if getting a run at them.

Worsboro Spectre (trap four) was fifth in the final last year. He is the most experienced in the line-up over track and trip and wouldn’t be a million miles away if getting a run.

Tuesday’s meeting at Sheffield is live on Sky Sports 5 from 7pm.

Trap Draw for Final

1 Mashmad Eyebrows

2 Trapstyle Jet

3 Hiya Butt

4 Worsboro Spectre (m)

5 Forest Natalee (m)

6 Brynoffa Jasmine (w)

The First Semi-Final

HIYA BUTT recorded his first win of 2017 in this red-hot qualifier. Hayley Keightley’s dog had looked a bit race-rusty when beaten at odds-on in the first round but he is clearly back and firing on all cyclinders after this effort. Last year’s Laurels winner and Derby third trapped well from two and then took advantage of a slow start from Trapstyle Jet on his inside to make the bend in front. It was plain sailing thereafter for Hiya Butt who went on to win by three and a half lengths in 15.84sec (normal). Forest Natalee broke slowly but made up ground in the latter stages to take second place, whilst the aforementioned Trapstyle Jet picked up nicely in the second half of the race to finish third.

The Second Semi-Final

Toolomaker Rambo was the favourite after an impressive first round victory but Paul Young’s dog was always on the backfoot after a slow start and was never a factor. In the absence of a challenge from the favourite it was left to Brynoffa Jasmin to dominate at odds of 12-1, the joint outsider of the sextet. The Mark Wallis-trained dog was marginally behind Worsboro Spectre from the traps but the quickly found top gear went ahead around the first and second turns. Once in front Brynoffa Jasmin stayed on well to recorded her fifth open race success from 10 starts. Worsboro Spectre, who was fifth in last year’s Northern Sprint final, kept on well to take second place, three parts of a length behind Mashmad Eyebrows.
