Star Sports Derby - Towcester 500M - £175,000 - The British bred challenge

LITTER-BROTHERS King Eden and King Kid spearhead the British-Bred tilt on the Star Sports English Derby, which starts on Thursday over 500 metres at Towcester.

Whilst those greyhounds bred in Ireland have been the main players in the competition over the years those born and brought up on home soil have had their moments – famously the brilliant back-to-back double achieved by the most revered winner of them all, Westmead Hawk, in 2005-2006.

King Eden and King Kid are the result of a December ’14 batch by Droopys Scolari out of that tremendous bitch, Shaws Dilemma. Both have unquestionable ability and were dominant in the Puppy Derby at Wimbledon, a competition in which they finished first and second.

Philip Simmonds, the Romford trainer, has enjoyed tremendous success with litter brothers Castell Henry and Bang On Giles. The former landed the Ladbrokes Puppy Derby in 2016, whilst the latter was placed in both the Produce Stakes at Swindon and British-Bred Derby over 500 metres at Towcester.

It’s unfortunate that they are drawn against each other in the first heat on Friday but, with three going three, connections will be hopeful both will make it through.

Droopys Acrobat, a semi-finalist in the British Breeders’ Stakes at Nottingham, is another who can keep a lofty presence to the Union flag for the duration of the competition, as is Carn Brea, the John Mullins-trained son of Take The Crown who competes in the first heat on Thursday.

British-Breds in the Derby: Alfies Prince, Bang On Giles, Bramble Robson, Bubbly Express, Carlos Count, Carn Brea, Castell Henry, Droopys Acrobat, Far Bank Frank, King Eden, King Kid, Lets Be Ready, Romeo Treaty, Salacres Koeman and Toy Solider.
