GBGB Awards - The 2017 GBGB Graded Greyhound of the Year

The 2017 GBGB Graded Greyhound of the Year is Nottingham’s Swift McHernon. The Jane White trained 2013 son of Godsend and Swift Passion raced 33 times in 2017 in A1, A2 and B1 grades, winning on ten occasions. He made his racecourse debut in August 2014 and won his first race, an A4, in December of that year. He has raced 127 times, exclusively at Nottingham, and has won 29 of his races. He is owned by the Barton Boys Syndicate, headed by William Miller and has also been crowned Nottingham Dog of the Year.

Nottingham Racing Manager Jason Smith said; “He was the unanimous winner of our vote for Nottingham dog of the year among owners, trainers and kennelhands and has proved to be the model of consistency. This award is very well deserved.”

GBGB Media and Communications Officer Simon Banks said “Swift McHernon is a very worthy winner, so consistent and with a great strike rate. He’s not only been a highly valued member of Nottingham’s graded strength, he has also been a loyal servant to his trainer and owners.”

Banks added; “It was a difficult choice for the panel this year as there were some strong contenders. Yarmouth’s Do It For Twiggy suffered a few niggling injuries in 2016 after a stellar 2015, in which he won the East Anglian Derby and the Kent Derby, but he bounced back in 2017 winning 13 of his 24 graded races. Peterborough’s Glenadda Pride has had an amazing 172 races since making his debut in August 2013 and early in 2017 beat his daughter Kathys Pride twice.”

The GBGB Graded Greyhound of the Year will be awarded at the GBGB Annual Awards dinner on Sunday 28th January.
