Coral Coronation Cup - Romford 575m -£5,000

ROMEO MANDATE and Shotgun Bullet shared the plaudits from Friday’s Coral Coronation Cup semi-finals at Romford with the pair stopping the clock in identical 34.95sec (+30) times for the 575m trip.

With Droopys Who (35.52sec) winning the other semi as he led home kennelmate Oakfield Caesar, John Mullins sends out half the field in this week’s £5,000 decider as he bids to continue a fine record at the Coral venue.

Ascot Woodie nailed the Suffolk-based handler a Champion Stakes, while Coronation Cup victories for Droopys Carvalho and Soviet Kenny mean a third Coronation crown is being eyed by the Yarmouth trainer on Friday.

However, he appreciates a fast start from the Derek Knight-trained Shotgun Bullet will put his runners and the rest of the field under pressure. “He’s a very nice dog, but we’re delighted with our team who have done us proud in this competition,” he said.

“To win three heats last week and then two semis on Friday shows we’re do something right and the dogs are running well, and we’ve always enjoyed going to Romford. Let’s hope one of them can cross the line in front on Friday.

“I thought ‘the doctor’ (Droopys Who) ran strongly in his semi and we’ve got to be happy with trap one again, and Romeo Mandate showed he can do things at both ends. He’s proved a fast dog in front on Friday, but battled from off the pace to win his heat, too.

“What can you say about Oakfield Caesar? He’s a terrific servant for the kennel, and a great dog for Chris (Waters) and Lee (Calcutt). He’s been in two Sussex Cup finals, a Gold Collar and an Essex Vase final, plus a couple of other comps at Romford - it’d be lovely to see him bang out!”

Favourite for the Coronation Cup, however, is Shotgun Bullet after the Hove raider repeated his heat win with another authoritative display as he came through a tough head-to-head with Murrys Act by blasting out and making all from Paul Crowson’s Liam Og.

Droopys Martial, trained by Dean Childs, completes the sextet having stayed on strongly behind  Romeo Mandate in their semi-final.

The Coronation Cup semis on Friday were supported by the heats of the Mitch Millward Marathon which were won, respectively, by Mark Wallis’s Rubys Rascal (46.84sec +50), Patrick Janssens’ Barricane Tommy (46.94sec) and Derek Knight’s Maireads Ivy (46.71sec).

Trap draw for Friday’s finals:-

Coral Coronation Cup: 1 Droopys Who, 2 Liam Og, 3 Romeo Mandate, 4 Shotgun Bullet (m), 5 Oakfield Caesar (w), Droopys Martial (w).

Mitch Millward Marathon: 1 Rylane Dash, 2 Millroad Smokey, 3 Rubys Rascal, 4 Maireads Ivy, 5 Goldies Hotspur (m), 6 Barricane Tommy (m).
