Awards Countdown - Coral Standard Performer of the Year

Astute Missile

bk d Kinloch Brae - China Doll, Aug 2014

Trainer: Seamus Cahill

Owner: Geoff Hill

2017 UK Race record: 21 races, 7 wins

Claims to fame: Boasts the biggest claim to fame as the Star Sports English Derby winner, victory in the £175,000 decider proving historic - being the first Towcester Derby, plus his 28-1 SP the biggest in Derby history. His strong-running style had been on show when reaching the finals of a 575m event at Romford, having finishing third in the Harlow Gold Cup behind Rubys Razzle.

Trainer says: “He was our first Derby win so that was, of course, extra special for us and Geoff and his family. We always knew he could be the type to keep qualifying given his short six-bend form, and once he made the final - and then trapped so well - well, it was the start of amazing night for all sorts of reasons. Of course, he suffered a bad injury a month afterwards, but is back trialling again and is in very good heart just now.”

Dorotas Wildcat

bk d Ballymac Vic - Droopys Daneel, May 2015

Trainer: Kevin Hutton

Owners: David Usher, Kevin Hutton

2017 Race record: 18 races, 11 wins

Claims to fame: Member of a Classic-winning litter, twice over, this litter brother of Scottish Derby champion Dorotas Woo Hoo and Irish Oaks heroine Forest Natalee, not to mention such luminaries as Monmore Puppy Derby winner Forest Con, Wildcat weighed in with victories in the Star Sports Derby Plate, Betfred Select Stakes and the Star Sports Shootout.

Trainer says: “We always thought the world of him and he’s a dog with extraordinary pace. He was so unlucky in the Derby itself, but then was faultless in the Derby Plate and to beat his peers in the Select Stakes was something special for both myself - it was my first Select win - and David. He ran a great race in the Eclipse final after a break, and then showed his class in the Shootout. A great year.”

King Elvis

wbk d Tullymurry Act - Skate On, Oct 2015

Trainer: Liz McNair

Owners: KSS Syndicate

2017 Race record: 23 races, 16 wins

Claims to fame: Four major wins in 2017 helped King Elvis earn his nomination - flying the flag for British breeding at the same time. Wins in the Produce Stakes at Swindon, the Gentleman George Trafalgar Cup, the RPGTV Henlow Derby and Servoca British Bred Derby helped Skate On win the best dam award - given National Sprint winner Queen Anna and Queen Adele are littermates.

Trainer says: “He had an amazing year and did everything we asked of him. This dog has so much speed - just like his sisters! - but stays well, too. Romford’s 400m was perhaps too sharp, but he was beaten by a top-class greyhound also in Roxholme Nidge in the Puppy Cup. He improved afterwards and his will-to-win shone through at Henlow and Towcester especially.”

Last year’s winner: Droopys Buick, owned by the Conlon family. Trained by Jimmy Wright.
