COOLAVANNY BANI made it two major wins in 2021 as the versatile Angela Harrison-trained star ran amok in the Ladbrokes Summer Stayers Final at Monmore on Saturday.

The £7,500-to-the-winner showpiece shared the stage with the Ladbrokes Gold Cup Final for a top-class double-header – and both finals went to Newcastle trackers.

Minglers Popeye would later win the Gold Cup for Stuart Tighe, but it was the Harrison-trained runner who starred in the 630m annual as a slick exit and dashing early speed saw her blaze a winning trail from the get-go.

Owned by Tony Camsell, Mark McLaughlin and Jimmy Wright, the trainer’s partner and assistant, the experienced sort Coolavanny Bani went to traps as the oldest runner in the final but remains at the top of her game.

A brilliant all-the-way victory in the semi-finals set up the opportunity to add to her Arc Grand Prix success at Sunderland in April – and the May 2018 daughter of Droopys Sydney and Toms Delight made no mistake again.

A slick start set up an early lead and, with a 12.54sec sectional, Coolavany Bani was soon in command with only Magical Firebird (Kevin Hutton) for company as crowding among the remainder of the field saw the front two escape.

Keeping up the gallop, Coolavanny Bani drew clear and crossed the line six and a half lengths clear of Magical Firebird in 37.87sec.

Third to Jaguar Macie in the Angel Of The North final over 480m, the three-year-old has stepped up in trip in style – much to the delight of connections.

Ian Sutherland, kennelhand for the winning trainer, told RPGTV: “She did it right at the boxes and has run really well again – and it’s great for the kennel and the staff. She’s getting on now but this last two weeks has really hit top form.

“She likes it here but had to be paw-perfect given the draw – ideally she prefers it inside – but was and got away.”

The Harrison team had earlier won the ladbrokes.com 480 Puppy Final with Moanteen Mikey and Jimmy Wright was also delighted with the kennel’s victories.

He said: “Bani needed to come away and make that third bend and she’s just a great bitch, so consistent. Mikey didn’t settled with us early on but has now and is coming forward. We bought him for his early pace and will probably look at the Romford Puppy Cup for him.”

Newcastle general manager Ian Walton was another happy man after his trainers scored victories in both major events on the night at Monmore. “I’m delighted for the trainers and greyhounds involved,” he said.

Walton added: “It’s a massive achievement for Stuart Tighe with Minglers Popeye to win his first Cat One success and wins for Moanteen Mikey, Coolavanny Bani and future star Droopys Conrad for Angela (Harrison) were very impressive.

“Well done also to Tom (Heilbron) with another Cat One final appearance for Pacemaker Ted. There’s real positivity at the moment at Newcastle. I’m sure Newcastle trainers will have a strong finish to the year.”
