Arena Racing Company Springbok – Central Park 480mH – £5,000
LENSON DOOLIN duly completed an unbeaten run through the Arena Racing Company Springbok (480mH) at Central Park on Monday.
The odds-on favourite had impressed in heats and semi-finals of the novice hurdlers’ championship, clocking the fastest times in both rounds, and underlined his dominance once again in the £5,000 decider.
Trained by Ricky Holloway and owned by Simon Trubshaw, the May 2019 son of Azza Azza Azza and The Other Tessa jumped to the front from the traps and was never headed as he quickly asserted on his way to a three-length victory in 29.39sec (normal).
The winning time was comfortably the fastest of the competition and enough to repel the challenge of gallant runner-up Runwild Teddy, trained by Jim Reynolds, who also sent home third-placed Over Speed Limit.
Simon Trubshaw, Lenson Doolin’s owner, told RPGTV: “Having come so close to winning the Springbok the last two years, I’m utterly delighted to finally bag it with Doolin.
“Since the first attempt with Nomansland Flyer, it’s become an obsession to try and land it and searching for the right dog to win it again starts now for next year – although I may have one already up my sleeve!
“I’d like to thank Len Ponder for honouring his word and letting me have Doolin. Also to Ricky (Holloway) for once again producing a masterclass over the sticks.
“Obviously it was an unforeseen scenario with the situation over Central Park’s lights. I’d like to thank them for putting on the competition, but what a shame it goes under the radar on a Monday morning when we should be billing it up if we want to save hurdles racing.
“Rick and I will be supporting Hove for their upcoming hurdles race, but we really need more tracks to host races – the trainers and owners will support them if the opportunity is there.
“Towcester have reconditioned and placed their hurdles so we are hoping they will start soon. Wouldn’t be great to have a hurdles race on Derby Final night – what better showcase? If there is Rick, I and the dogs will be there!”
Lenson Doolin’s victory helped Ricky Holloway to a fourth win as a trainer after Springbok wins for Westmead Meteor (2013), Lenson Wilson (2018) and Burgess Brandy (2019), while as an owner he also scored with Rossa Ranger (2001) and Kaysers Hill (2006).
