Trained by Jimmy Fenwick for Neil McGregor, the December 2019 daughter of Droopys Sydney and Bellmore Lucy broke quickly in the 714m decider and was always in a race-winning position on the inside of fast-starting Olga (Pat Curtin) and took up the running off the second bend on her way to a fantastic double.

Keeping up the tempo, Bellmore Sally powered through the first lap in 23.07sec and kept on for a three-length success over the staying-on Roll On Sydney (Paul Young) and Olga in 44.77sec (+30), the fastest time in the £20,000 event.

The victory secured Bellmore Sally’s place in Crayford history as the third greyhound to win successive Golden Jackets after the late Brian Timcke’s Bobs Regan (1991/92) and Derek Knight’s Wexford Minx (1994/95) – and winning trainer Fenwick has not ruled out attempting a third straight attempt in 2024.

He said: “Look, it’s a long way off and she’d be over four years old then, but she loves her visits to Crayford – remember she also made the Kent St Leger final there last year. So much so we’ve got to have a crack at the (Ladbrokes) TV Trophy there in April. It’s 874m and will push her, but she runs the track so well and doesn’t mind the travelling.

“Many thanks to the sponsors and to Crayford itself. What they do for owners and trainers on Golden Jacket mornings is top notch – and to get that treatment two years running has been fantastic. It makes the long journeys south easier to handle, but if these races are being put on and we’ve got the right runner, we’ll be there!”

Danny Rayment, Crayford racing manager, oversaw a gala card at the Kent venue on Saturday and was delighted how the fixture went, being among the first to congratulate Bellmore Sally and winning connections for their success in the showpiece event.

He said: “To win back-to-back Golden Jackets really is something special so well done to Jimmy and Melanie Fenwick, owner Neil McGregor – and Sally herself! I was working on the bars at Catford when Bobs Regan won his double and hadn’t joined Crayford when Wexford Minx won hers, so this is my first back-to-back winner and I’d say Bellmore Sally was even more impressive this year than last.

“Mark Wallis winning another Peter Bussey Memorial probably shouldn’t have been the biggest surprise given his record – I was racing manager for his previous seven winners! Well done to connections of Antigua Sugar. She was probably the most impressive winner in the competition’s history – certainly in terms of how easily she won.

“I’d also like to say thank you to the family of David Wicks for accepting our invitation to join us at the track and present the trophy for the memorial race we staged this year. ‘Wicksy’ was a real friend of all of ours here at Crayford and he is much missed.

“People will know him as a clerk for bookmaker John Summerhayes but he also worked as an SP returner and also penned our racecard comments for many years. He also joined us for our curry nights and poker nights – we loved his company. He was a gentleman.

“Oh Cosmopolitan won the David Wicks Memorial Trophy for John Mullins and, for good measure, John had the first and second with Icaals Rocco, the Guys & Dolls winner here last year, chasing him home for a Mullins one-two.”
