BGBF British Breeders Stakes – Nottingham 500m – £10,000
SHOCKWAVE ONYX set the fastest time in the heats of the BGBF British Breeders Stakes at Nottingham on Monday as his part-owner, trainer and breeder Kim Gooding landed a littermate double in the Category One event – with another littermate Glatton Gianni (Richard Devenish) making it a brilliant family treble on the night.
Lining up in the third of six heats over 500m at the Colwick Park venue, the December 2019 son of Droopys Sydney and Southoe Silver overcame a spell off to score on his first start of 2022 as he trapped in front on his way to a 4.90sec split before winning by a length and a half over Ballyblack Speed (Richard Yeates) and Locked Down (Barrie Draper).
The winning time for Shockwave Onyx, the Produce Stakes third and British Bred Derby semi-finalist, was 29.95sec (+10) which set the standard, although litter brother Shockwave Iolite (30.09sec) almost impressed when coming again on the run for home to win heat six from Romeo Top Gun (Patrick Janssens) and Coppice Flyer (Kevin Hutton).
Glatton Gianni, a litter brother of Kim Gooding’s winners, had earlier initiated the family treble when making all in heat two for the Richard Devenish kennel.
Well away, he was always in command before running away from the opposition to score by almost seven lengths in 30.38sec from Acomb Jenny (Kevin Ferguson) and Shockwave Amber (Kim Gooding), another member of the December 2019 Droopys Sydney-Southoe Silver batch which enjoyed such a tremendous night for their various connections.
Indeed, another Gooding-trained member of the litter qualified for Monday’s semi-finals in heat five. The Kevin Ferguson-trained Acomb Winston won the heat narrowly, coming through to shade Shockwave Zircon, with British Bred Derby runner-up Signet Otis qualifying in third here. The winning time was 30.20sec.
Kim Gooding’s heat double was matched by Kevin Hutton in the other heats. Boca Junior (29.97sec) led home favourite Signet Denver for a kennel one-two in heat one – Angie Kibble’s Only You was third here – before No Worries (30.16sec) struck in heat four in all-the style from Emotional (Angie Kibble) and another Hutton runner in Houston Main.
Liz Mort, chair of the British Greyhound Breeders Forum (BGBF), said: “It was a great start to our first British-bred competitions of the year – one of our big ones, the Category One BGBF Breeders Stakes at Nottingham.
“Six very strong heats – and six favourites overturned, which shows how competitive the event is. Congratulations to all the runners and their connections – and it was great to see some really good young dogs coming to the fore.
“Two litters in particular stand out. Kim Gooding’s Dec 2019 Droopys Sydney x Southoe Silver litter and Kevin Hutton’s Magical Bale x Forest Natalee Jan 2020 litter.
“Five from Kim’s litter of eight are through to the semis, with Shockwave Onyx having posted the fasted time of the heats. It’s especially pleasing as they come from a long line of British-breds through the dam line of Dilys Steels’s fifth generation Glatton Kennels homebred Southoe Silver.
“Three from Kevin’s Magical Bale x Forest Natalee litter are through, as are two from the Burtons’ older Taylors Sky x Terminator litter that has been so prominent for the team over the past couple of years, one being Boca Junior who just squeaked past longtime leader Signet Denver on the line in heat one.
“It’s difficult as they are all worthy of mention, but Angie Kibble is also doubly handed in the semis with two of her older bitches, both out of her good brood Wiki Waki Woo, while Kevin Ferguson also has two in Acomb Jenny and Acomb Winston out of his homebred Acomb Ruby, by Kinloch Brae.
“Thanks to Nottingham for hosting this Cat 1 again. We’re looking forward to the semis on Monday when we’ll also see the heats of our BGBF Midlands Sprint. These two races are firm favourites in our calendar, with finals night for both on Monday, March 21.”
