POCKET LOLA continued Seamus Cahill’s love affair with Towcester when winning the BGBF Truframe British Bred Champion Stakes Final on Saturday – extending her winning sequence to a magnificent seven in the process.

The 2017 Derby-winning trainer, who has also landed Puppy Derby, Champion Hurdle and Lowther Stakes wins at the Northamptonshire track, struck with the home-bred June 2019 daughter of Droopys Sydney and Banabane in the £3,000 Category Two event for her owners the Magnificent Five (UK).

Racing to a superb 4.09sec split, the youngest runner in the final always had her rivals under pressure as she stretched clear before holding the persistent challenge of King Louis (Liz McNair) to win by half a length in 29.63sec (normal).

Trainer Cahill, who owns the two-year-old in partnership with wife Teresa and Myles and Clare Simmons, said: “She’s just improved out of season and just wants to win – that’s seven in a row now and we’re delighted.”

“It’s been a terrific night and thanks to BGBF and Dave Firmager for sponsoring this competition and a big thanks to Kevin Boothby and his team for staging another great Derby meeting – and to Ben Keith and Star Sports. It’s great to see the crowds here.”

Liz Mort, chair of the British Greyhound Breeders Forum (BGBF), presented the trophy along with Dave Firmager and congratulated all concerned.

Mort said: “Well done to Seamus and Teresa Cahill and the Simmons family for their win with Pocket Lola – she’s definitely a showgirl!

“It was a really gutsy performance from this little bitch, home bred from the Cahills’ super brood Banabane. She led from the start and fought off a strong challenge from favourite King Louis who tracked her all the way.

“Thank you to David Firmager and TruFrame for sponsoring the Champion Stakes with us! David and Nicola have been supporters of British breeding for a long time and it’s great to have them on board for this event.

“And while the McNairs finished second there, they and the KSS syndicate had two winners on the night including a British-bred triumph for Queen Beyonce in the Bob Betts Memorial.

“Overall it’s been a fantastic Derby night. After the year we’ve all had it was wonderful to be back at Towcester. It’s such an amazing venue and Kevin Boothby and his team have really done themselves proud with this.

“A big thank-you to them for hosting the BGBF TruFrame Champion Stakes.”
