MOANTEEN MIKEY is the RPGTV/GWA Greyhound of the Month for December after winning the Arena Racing Company All England Cup at Newcastle during the month.

Trained by Angela Harrison for owners Tony Camsell, Fred Ellison and Bobby Lindsay, the October 2019 son of the kennel’s former GBGB Greyhound of the Year Droopys Buick and Moanteen Golden ended the year on a high for the Newcastle kennel when landing the Category One title known as the ‘North East Derby’.

Victory secured a third All England Cup title for Harrison after back-to-back successes with Droopys Expert and Droopys Verve in 2017 and 2018.

In the Newcastle final, Moanteen Mikey reversed Sunderland Classic form with the George Cunningham-trained Narcos The Great and had lined up as one of two Harrison-trained finalists along with Hardy Rebel. Connections have suggested a crack at the Ladbrokes Winter Derby at Monmore is on the cards for the winner.

Clive Lawrence, RPGTV’s executive producer, said: “It was a really strong month with a whole host of classy nominations – so well done to Moanteen Mikey, his owners, Angela (Harrison) and Jimmy (Wright). After what has been a very tough time for Angela and the family, it was particularly nice to see everyone enjoying themselves at the presentation podium.

“The All England Cup is known as the North East Derby so a local winner is always welcomed am sure – and for greyhound racing itself the news that next year’s event will be worth £20,000 to the winner is a real boost for owners and trainers.

“No doubt the Harrison team will be assembling another strong team for the 2022 running and and I’d imagine enjoying a four-timer on All England final night in December just added to what was a top night for the kennel on their home patch.

“We look forward to see Moanteen Mikey back on RPGTV soon given the Winter Derby at Monmore will be shown on the channel and given connections have intimated the competition could be an early-season target.”

In taking the monthly honour backed by RPGTV, Moanteen Mikey edged out George Curtis & Ballyregan Bob Memorial winner Antigua Lava (Mark Wallis), National Sprint champion Crossfield Dusty (Patrick Janssens), British Bred Derby heroine Fabulous Azurra (Patrick Janssens), Puppy Derby victor Make Noise (Seamus Cahill), Olympic champion Prince Of Troy (David Mullins), Eclipse hero Signet Ace (Kevin Hutton) and Champion Hurdle winner Toolmaker Daddy (Ricky Holloway).
