Double celebration for Jimmy and Mel Fenwick as the exceptional Bellmore Sally sails away again at Crayford
BELLMORE SALLY provided the perfect wedding anniversary present for Jimmy and Melanie Fenwick when racing away to victory in the second semi-final of the Jay & Kay Coach Tours Kent St Leger at Crayford on Saturday – and now stands on the verge of an incredible treble at the Kent track this year.
The Newcastle superstar has already in 2023 successfully defended her Premier Greyhound Racing Golden Jacket title plus landed the Ladbrokes TV Trophy. She now aims to go one better than in last year’s final of the Kent St Leger (second to Rising Coco) when lining up in this weekend’s £10,000-to-the-winner decider.
A warm order to win Saturday’s second semi-final, Bellmore Sally was taken on and led by Golden Jacket finalist Olga (Pat Curtin) but went into overdrive before halfway and thereafter raced away for another runaway success, scoring by almost 11 lengths from puppy She Loves You (Michelle Brown) and Olga, who also qualifies for Saturday’s final.
The winning time was 45.03sec (normal) and, on the day of the Fenwicks’ 23rd wedding anniversary, the performance of the December 2019 daughter of Droopys Sydney and Bellmore Lucy thrilled the couple – who are unlikely to forget the day in a hurry.
“I’m not sure there’s too many couples from the north-east who can save they travelled to London and back in less than a day – and won a race in the process!” said Jimmy Fenwick. “Sitting in the car for that amount of hours meant we certainly spent a lot of time together on our anniversary – although did go out on Friday to celebrate!”
On Saturday’s performance and looking ahead to the final, Fenwick added: “She’s come out of the race really well and the way she’s powered clear on the second lap shows you what sort of form she’s in – and we can now look forward to the final.
“Trap four at Crayford works for her as we know. However, the three (Olga) runs middle to wide and it’s going to depend on how Sally breaks, but she seems to run best third time up in these comps and hopefully that’s the case again.”
The Keith Robins-trained Luna Jezabelle produced a game and gutsy effort to reel in Low Pressure (Belinda Green) in a thrilling finish to the first semi-final, just a short-head separating the pair after 714m.
The latter trapped only moderately but after a bump from the boxes paced up to lead as expected into the bend and thereafter was always the one to catch. However, Luna Jezabelle turned second and the November 2019 daughter of Droopys Sydney and Brogan Tic Tac kept up the pressure and launched a challenge off the last bend.
The pair hit the winning line together with the verdict going the way of Luna Jezabelle who will line up in Saturday’s final as the oldest runner, the Suffolk Downs raider joined in the final by runner-up Low Pressure and third-placed Roll On Sydney (Paul Young). It is the latter’s second major Crayford final this year after finishing second to Bellmore Sally in the Premier Greyhound Racing Golden Jacket.
