Elusivenomore wins BresBet Gymcrack and sets sights on Owlerton double
ELUSIVENOMORE landed a surprise but deserved victory in the £17,500 BresBet Gymcrack Final at Sheffield on Sunday and will now have his sights set on claiming the bonus with sponsors for winning the Steel City Cup.
Trained by Jimmy Fenwick and part-owned by the Newcastle handler with his wife Melanie and former Sky Sports and RPGTV producer Dave Lawrence, the 12-1 chance broke well and paced up into a handy position heading into the turn as fast-starting favourite Droopys Trade (Patrick Janssens) set the tempo.
All look set fair for the 10-11 chance to hit the first bend in front. However, kennelmate Romeo Ability rushed up inside into the turn and, coming together with Droopys Trade which in turn saw Romeo Alliance knocked over, lost his chance and hampered the leader which allowed Elusivenomore to slip through into the lead off the second bend.
Thereafter, the August 2023 son of Ballymac Best and Ballymac Ariel was away and the one to catch. Keeping up the gallop all the way to the wire, Elusivenomore crossed the line two lengths clear of the running-on Romeo Tomcat, another of the four Patrick Janssens-trained finalists, and third-placed Droopys Trade.
The winning time for the 500m trip was 29.36sec (normal).
Sheffield’s director of racing Andrew Mascarenhas said: “Well done to Jimmy and the team for following up their victory with kennelmate Wicky Ned last year – and no doubt Elusivenomore will have an eye on claiming the bonus for winning the Steel City, just as Wicky Ned did last year.
“All looked to be going well for market leader Droopys Trade once he set the early pace, but he took a slight middle course and encountered trouble on the run-up and was unable to get away from the field.
“Romeo Alliance took a tumble but was reported none the worse by Patrick Janssens afterwards, which was great. He should be back on the track in a couple of weeks.
“Many thanks to the sponsors BresBet and I’m looking forward to seeing the progression of all the finalists in their careers. They are a talented bunch of pups.”
