February 2020 GWA/RPGTV Greyhound of the Month – Springberry May
POOLE grader Springberry May was recently awarded the RPGTV/GWA Greyhound of the Month for February after polling over 60 per cent of the vote among RPGTV viewers.
Trained by John Campbell, the July 2017 daughter of Droopys Jet and Badger Daly won all three of her races at Poole in February – once in D1 and twice in A1 – as part of a winning streak of seven victories over both two and four bends.
Clearly a particular favourite of RPGTV viewers at the Dorset track, Poole commentator Gordon Cosburn is very much a paid-up member of the two-year-old’s fan club and has called most of her successes.
He said: “Springberry May was always well regarded when she graded on the card in A4 back in March 2019 – the market vibes were always positive. Her trials had been decent and she always shaped as one who might progress.
“Therefore it’s great to see her a year later winning this award and, in hindsight, how was she ever allowed to start at 14-1 in a D1 sprint when her sequence of victories began in January?
“Springberry May really is a commentator’s dream. She’s a clockwork trapper over both sprint and standard trips but is by no means a short-runner over the 450m – and her back- straight pace is electric!
“John Campbell, her trainer, has done a fantastic job with her. John’s greyhounds always hold their form, are always well turned out, and everyone at Poole knows a Campbell runner is invariably the one to beat!
Clive Lawrence, RPGTV executive producer, said: “We were delighted to award Springberry May the February award – she thoroughly deserves it.
“We had one of Crayford’s winningmost graded runners Guvnas Dream win in January for Jim Reynolds and then Springberry May attracted most votes in February. It goes to underline the fact that viewers of the show like a winner – graded or open class!
“John’s bitch beat a host of stars to award and we congratulate him and his team. Now our attention will turn to March. It’s a truncated month for obvious reasons – and like everyone we hope we’re back racing soon – but there’s a trophy here for the March winner ready to be voted for!
“We will announce a list of nominations in due course.”
For the record, Springberry May topped the RPGTV viewers poll for February ahead of Patrick Janssens’ Skilful Sandie, the John Mullins-trained Swift Lettuce and Heather Dimmock’s Volcanic Reef.
