February 2022 GWA/RPGTV Greyhound of the Month – Bellmore Sally
BELLMORE SALLY was recently named the RPGTV/GWA Greyhound of the Month for February – making her the third consecutive Newcastle-trained winner of the award.
Following All England champion Moanteen Mikey in December and then Essex Vase heroine Coolavanny Aunty in January, both trained by Angela Harrison, it was the turn of trackmate Bellmore Sally to receive most GWA votes and take the February honour after her victory in the Premier Greyhound Racing Golden Jacket at Crayford.
Trained by Jimmy Fenwick for Neil McGregor, the December 2019 daughter of Droopys Sydney and Bellmore Lucy added her name to a famous roll of honour at Crayford.
Her delighted trainer Jimmy Fenwick said: “It’s great to receive another trophy for being Greyhound of the Month so thanks to all those who voted.
“She was brilliant at Crayford and just handled everything there so well, from the travelling to the track itself,” he said. “We were made to feel very welcome and wouldn’t hesitate returning. But it’s very much Yarmouth for her now and we’re thrilled to have made another major final being she’s in the George Ing St Leger final on Saturday.
“She’s in good heart for that, although it’s a very hot race!” added Fenwick, who will send out Bellmore Sally against January award winner Coolavanny Aunty among others.
“You always needs a slice of luck but she’s well and we’re hoping for the best,” he added. “Let’s just hope Sally gets a clear run – she’s due one soon! In the meantime it’s great to get this award and I’m delighted for her owner Neil McGregor.
“We bought her from breeder Donal Lanigan and Stephan Behan who work together with the ‘Bellmore’ dogs. In a schooling trial she did 29.10sec at Kilkenny, but her running from the third bend to the winning line was exceptional.
“Sally was always a six-bend purchase for us, so the four-bend progress she made was almost a bonus and making the finals of the Puppy Classic and Empress Stakes was great.
“With Yarmouth she’s now reached four Cat One finals in 20 races which is some going and we’ve been delighted with her.”
In taking the monthly honour backed by RPGTV, Bellmore Sally edged out Winter Derby winner Burnchurch Mick (Richard Rees), Northamptonshire Sprint winner Crossfield Dusty (Patrick Janssens) and the now-retired longstanding Sheffield campaigner Droopys Greta (Phil Sanderson).
