BAYWATCH BULLET capped a great night for local trainer Belinda Green when winning the Premier Greyhound Racing Regency – and with it the £20,000 prize for owners Billy Boyle, Danny Jones and Gary Whittington, her husband – on a gala card featuring a host of finals at Hove.

On a night the famous 695m annual shared the stage with the Coral Sussex Cup Final over 515m, Green’s in-form kennel landed a brilliant four-timer including the six-bend showpiece plus sent out Wasted Monday to finish second to Newinn Benni in the four-bend Category One.

So while success for the improving Ballymac Kinga, Turkish Lira in the Coral Regency Consolation and Bombout Bullet in a supporting sprint cheered connections of the Albourne-based kennel, it was the performance of Baywatch Bullet that delighted her supporters – who barely had a moment’s worry.

Trapping smartly and leading on the short run to the first bend, the well-bred May 2021 daughter of Droopys Sydney and Blundel Spark, a litter sister of Savana Heross and Jacktavern Magic and a half-sister of former Irish marathon star Dana Point, soon had her rivals strung out behind.

With 6-5 favourite Cooladerry Dust (Nathan Hunt) missing the break, it was left to Bubbly Scorcher (Paul Young) to turn behind Baywatch Bullet and the Romford-based runner kept up the pressure in behind but could never quite get on terms with the Hove bitch, a 7-1 chance, who maintained a searing gallop up front.

On her way to Regency glory, Baywatch Bullet crossed the line two and a quarter lengths clear of Bubbly Scorcher, with Haka Carlo (Jason Heath) keeping on well in third. The winning time was 41.51sec (+30).

A thrilled winning trainer Green said: “CJ absolutely deserves this, because she’s just been consistent. You never get ahead of yourself but she was running well and was probably a touch unlucky not to have a Cat One even before this.

“It was a great night all-round. Winning the Regency Consolation with Lira was just great, as were wins for both Ballymac Kinga and Bombout Bullet.

“You dream of nights like this, in front of a big crowd at Hove and against some top trainers and greyhounds, and things just fell right for us. It was great for Albourne as well given Derek’s (Knight) team won the Sussex Cup with Newinn Benni – that made for a nice Sunday morning back at the kennels with two big-race winners showing off!”

Baywatch Bullet’s part-owner Billy Boyle, landing his second Regency title after Billys Bullet struck in 2016, said: “I always thought she had a chance to lead and therefore was over-priced and, once she’s broken like that, I knew she was on her way.

“Well done to Lindy, Gary and all the team – they do a fantastic job. They handled her expertly going through the competition and absolutely deserve their fifth Cat One and my third with them.

“Thanks also to Hove for producing a great and consistent running surface throughout the competition and for their hospitality on finals night.”
