GOUGANE JET completed an incredible nine-timer when racing unbeaten through the Arena Racing Company Scurry Gold Cup Final at Perry Barr on Thursday – setting a brilliant new track record in the final.

The £5,000-to-the-winner GBGB Category Two event was chief support to the Premier Greyhound Racing Oaks Final on a huge double-header at the Birmingham venue and victory went to the Mark Wallis-trained flyer.

The August 2020 son of Droopys Jet and Paper Doll has made a huge impression since making a winning UK debut at Monmore in July, being beaten just once in 11 starts, and extending the winning sequence in the sport’s traditional sprinter’s Classic.

Owned by Alan Curtis, Eammon Johnston and Stephen Oliver, Gougane Jet was soon in command in the 275m decider with a fast break quickly settling the issue as he roared clear of his rivals to take the prize from Ballymac Slapup (John Mullins).

The winning distance was two and three-quarter lengths and the time posted 15.80sec (normal), which clipped one spot off the previous best set by the Jim Reynolds-trained Horseshoe Ping in the Scurry Gold Cup heats in May 2007.

Winning trainer Mark Wallis said: “I’m delighted for Jet’s owners and the team here. The Scurry Gold Cup is one of the most famous races in the sport – and until Thursday we’d not won it. So that in itself makes it very special.

“He’s a brilliant sprinter and is proving just so consistent. He’ll next race at Towcester on Sunday in the heats of the (Gain Greyhound Nutrition) Sovereign Stakes. All being well, the (Arc) National Sprint at Nottingham might be the plan after.”

Martin Seal, racing manager at Perry Barr, said: “What an exhibition of trapping ability and sprinting we saw with Gougane Jet and congratulations to Mark Wallis and his team and the dog’s owners who really have a gem on their hands there.

“It was great to see a good crowd here for the Premier Greyhound Racing Oaks and Arena Racing Company Scurry Gold Cup finals – and we’ve been treated to some excellent performances and three track records in all.

“And once again it was great to stage the Scurry Gold Cup – and seeing Gougane Jet’s track record has almost brought us full circle. Perry Barr was home to the Scurry in 2007 when Horseshoe Ping set the track record before the event went to Belle Vue.

“So some 15 years later, with the Scurry Gold Cup now back here from last year, we have a new track record for the sprint here.
