GRAHAM HOLLAND, the English Derby-winning trainer, landing a double in the 77th British Bred Produce Stakes 2023 at Swindon on Thursday.
Wins for Romeo Hotshot and Romeo Hanzo created another slice of history for the Co Tipperary-based handler, who in the same week as sending three runners to Swindon had landed the JenningsBet Select Stakes at Nottingham on Monday – all while building up to Saturday’s BoyleSports Irish Derby Final at Shelbourne Park with Bockos Crystal.
First up was Romeo Hotshot who led close home in heat two to edge out longtime leader King Stevens (Liz McNair) in 28.25sec (+10), before Romeo Hanzo, who had himself impressed in the early rounds of the English Derby at Towcester, made all in heat four to lead home Acomb Jasper (Kevin Ferguson) in 27.88sec (+10).
And with Romeo Atomic qualifying in third behind King Capaldi, Holland’s trio will return to the Blunsdon venue for Thursday’s second round.
“We were delighted with all three of them,” said Holland. “It’s all new for us travelling over for the Produce Stakes but David and Nicola Firmager are great friends and we train the three of them for those guys. They’re British-bred, of course, so are fully qualified, so having travelled to the UK on Monday for the Select Stakes we’re back again!
“Swindon is a good running track, although has changed somewhat since we were last there! Hanzo handled it well and you get the feeling that both Hotshot and Atomic will improve for the look. It’s just a shame Hotshot and Atomic are in the same heat, but it’s all about qualifying and we’ll take our chance.”
Fastest of the round was the Liz McNair-trained Queen Joni in heat three with the December 21 youngster helping her trainer to a fantastic littermate treble as the daughter of Droopys Sydney and Queen Beyonce raced away for an impressive five-length success over Acomb Felix (Kevin Ferguson) in a standard-setting 27.84sec (+10).
Queen Joni’s winning effort was matched by litter sister Queen Shakira (28.25sec +10) in heat seven, while litter brother King Capaldi (28.07sec +10) rounded off the meeting with a runaway victory in heat nine and will line up as one of eight McNair-trained runners in the second round – with four of them in Thursday’s second round heat six.
Romeo Kodi, a littermate of Irish raider Romeo Hanzo, struck for last year’s Produce Stakes-winning trainer Kevin Hutton in heat one, scoring in a fast 27.89sec (+10), while the other heats were won by Paul Lithgow’s The Bulldog (27.97sec +10), Kevin Ferguson’s Acomb Alfie (28.29sec +10) and David Mullins’ Fabulous Bling (28.23sec +10).
