The Greyhound Writers’ Association is delighted to announce the Draper family as the latest recipients of the GWA Services to Greyhound Racing Award.

After some 40 years at the helm and having sent out thousands of winners on the open-race scene and at home track Sheffield, Rotherham-based Barrie Draper handed over the trainer’s licence to daughter Rose at the turn of the year

However, the family’s links with the iconic Owlerton Stadium, and the sport itself, go back even further.

Albert Draper, late father of Barrie and his brother Trevor, was in many ways the driving force, inspiration and support for his two sons to become successful in greyhound racing. Trevor actually held the licence before Barrie took over in 1984.

Great greyhounds and big-race winners to have carried the Draper name include the likes of He Knows, Farloe Cobbler, Im Okay, Farloe Hurricane, Boherna On Air, Boherna Best, Eden Star, Farloe Warhawk, Bull Run Button and the exceptional Ballymac Eske.

“The Draper kennel has always been a family affair – and a hugely successful one at that,” said Greyhound Writers’ Association chairman Jonathan Hobbs.

“The Draper name is synonymous with the best of greyhound racing – especially in the South Yorkshire area – and that looks set to continue for many years to come.

“We all wish Rose the very best having now taken over the licence, but I’m sure mum and dad – Barrie and Debbie – will be in and around supporting her.

“Rose’s brother Mark has also been an ever-present at the kennels for many years assisting his dad, while uncle Trevor might spend most of his days on the beach now, but is always a phone call and short flight away when called on!”
