Hazard Syndicate Kent National Hurdle – Crayford 540m – £3,000
ROXHOLME BISCUIT led home a Ricky Holloway one-two-three in The Hazard Syndicate Kent National Hurdle at Crayford on Saturday.
The GBGB Category Two competition was chief support, along with the Crayford Rose Bowl, to the Ladbrokes Gold Collar and Jay & Kay Coach Tours Kent St Leger finals – and it was dominated by jumps specialist Holloway.
Well away, Roxholme Biscuit was nevertheless led into the bend by kennelmate Droopys Cruiser and, while crowded at the turn, was always in a decent position and proved too strong for his rivals to complete an unbeaten run through the 540m event.
Hitting the front at the sixth bend, the March 2018 son of Kinloch Brae and Roxholme Magic raced away to win by four and a quarter lengths from staying-on Nomansland Flyer, another kennelmate, and the tiring Droopys Cruiser.
All three will now head next for the Colossus Bets Grand National which starts at Central Park on Sunday – entries close on Wednesday – and Holloway is delighted with the form of his team ahead of the hurdlers’ Classic at the Kent venue.
He said: “It’s the first time I’ve won the Kent National Hurdle, which is great because the race was proving something of a jinx to me – Razldazl Raidio being dragged back from behind when leading at the last hurdle was one example.
“With the retirement of [GBGB Hurdler of the Year] Turnhouse Jet, Roxholme Biscuit has stepped into his position as the country’s number one hurdler, so next stop it’s very much Central Park for the [Colossus Bets] Grand National.
“All four of my finalists at Crayford (Lenson Wilson was fifth) will head to Central Park now along with our newest recruit Roxholme Butt. Open-race fans will know him as a top stayer and he’s looked a very nice hurdler in trials.
“Obviously he lacks the experience of Biscuit,” added Holloway. “He remained unbeaten during the competition but, himself being a novice, he’s made an immediate impact on the hurdling scene.
“I’d say the Grand National will be Lenson Wilson’s career swansong. He’s another of former [GBGB] Hurdle of the Year having won the Springbok and Champion Hurdle. He’ll have one more crack at completing the set!”
Crayford trainer James Turner was instrumental in sponsorship of the race and naming it The Hazard Syndicate Kent National Hurdle.
He said: “Firstly I’d like to congratulate Ricky and Roxholme Biscuit in winning the final. Being a hurdles fan, when the dog does it right it’s a joy to watch.
“When the Grand National was delayed – and there were doubts it was taking place at all – myself and Patrick Rugg had discussions with Ian Smyth and Peter (Broadbridge) and Danny (Rayment) at Crayford and asked if we could sponsor a competition at Crayford.
“There was nothing about for hurdlers, so credit to them as well for staging the event, and we can look forward now to the [Colossus Bets] Grand National.
“I’m hoping my Swift Loki [RPGTV Champion Hurdle winner] is okay for it. Unfortunately he cut his foot quite badly about six weeks ago and had his web cut back. It meant he missed the Kent National Hurdle which was such a shame.
“However it’s healed well and he’s trialling back this week and fingers crossed for the Grand National. I’ve also a few more I’m schooling and coming along nicely – although probably not as impressive as Roxholme Butt!”
Out of luck with Micks Little Gem in the Jay & Kay Coach Tours Kent St Leger Final, trainer Michelle Brown was nevertheless on the mark in another final on the night – the GBGB Category Three ladbrokes.com Crayford Rose Bowl Final over 380m.
Her Signature Callum (Tullymurry Act-Franks Dream, July 17) rode a second-bend bump to collar long-time leader Agincourt Eve (Jason Ray) late on to land the £1,000 prize by a short-head in 23.43sec.
