In-form Seamus Cahill wins his first East Anglian Derby with Watch The Limo – now bring on Saturday’s St Leger!
WATCH THE LIMO landed trainer Seamus Cahill a first victory in the famous event when taking advantage of misfortune to early leader Flickofacoin in an eventful Click Competitions 77th East Anglian Greyhound Derby Grand Final at Yarmouth on Wednesday.
Trained by the Hove handler for the Cahill Racing Club, the July 2021 son of Droopys Sydney and Limini, who lined up as the youngest finalist in the £15,000-to-the-winner contest, was well away but quickly moved off into the path of favourite Coolavanny Shado, who was hampered, before turning second to fast-starting Flickofacoin.
The latter, running arguably the best race of his career for Cornelius Condon, had burst to a 5.17sec sectional to lead the charge before breaking down off the second bend, which handed the race to Watch The Limo, who raced away for a four and a half length success over Swift Iconic (John Mullins) and Supa Nova (Paul Burr) in 27.78sec (normal).
Cahill had gone close in the 462m annual back in 2015 when sending out runner-up Southfield Jock, who led until close home before local star Do It For Twiggy struck. He also had two finalists last year in the form of Drahan Jet and Carols Legacy.
The ex-Irish Watch The Limo was a three-time winner at Kilkenny before joining the Kent-based handler and won on UK debut at Oxford before heading to Yarmouth. The Premier Greyhound Racing Kent Derby at Central Park is a possible next target for Watch The Limo.
Wednesday’s card also included two GBGB Category Three finals for the Sprint and Derby Purse, both sponsored by the MWD Partnership. These were won respectively by Kevin Quinton’s local star and 277m track record holder Quagos Jack (16.02sec) and the John Mullins-trained Aayamza Sydney (40.83sec), who held off Ballymac Johnjo (Mark Wallis) over the 659m distance.
Stadium director Simon Franklin was delighted to see another bumper holiday crowd at the east coast track for the 77th East Anglian Greyhound Derby Grand Final, especially with many heading for a night at the greyhounds after visiting Yarmouth Racecourse for the popular east coast racing festival.
“There was another good atmosphere and big crowd here on Wednesday. Thanks to all the sponsors for their support, especially Click Competitions for backing our biggest race of the year in the East Anglian Greyhound Derby Grand Final and to Mike Davis, Michelle Connolly and Mark Wallis of the MWD Partnership for supporting the Sprint and Purse.
“Our best wishes, of course, go to the connections of Flickofacoin and Cornelius Condon. The race looked at his mercy until his injury and we wish him the speediest of recoveries. However, well done to Seamus Cahill and his team.
“Seamus has been a regular supporter of this race for many years and has gone close to winning before. Well done to him and Watch The Limo.
“I’d also like to personally thank all the owners and trainers for entering the East Anglian Derby, the Sprint and Purse, and our supporting opens on final night.”
