Ladbrokes Cesarewitch heroine Savana Volcano named RPGTV/GWA Greyhound of the Month for November
SAVANA VOLCANO, trained by Diane Henry for owner Kevin Boothby, was recently named the RPGTV/GWA Greyhound of the Month for November after her Ladbrokes Cesarewitch victory at Crayford.
The May 2018 daughter of Confident Rankin and Volcano impressed members of the Greyhound Writers’ Association by winning the GBGB Category One event at the Kent track well into her fifth year.
Landing heat and final impressively, the four-year-old had in September finished second to Havana Lover in the Premier Greyhound Racing St Leger at Perry Barr to Havana Lover so was continuing a fine recent run of form.
“Diane Henry had a brilliant 2022 and her handling of Savana Volcano was top notch,” said Clive Lawrence, executive producer at award sponsors RPGTV. “She just seemed to get better and better into senior status and was a real credit to connections.”
Crayford racing manager Danny Rayment oversaw what turned out to be a brilliant day for the Towcester-based trainer and her main owner with victories in both the Ladbrokes Cesarewitch with Savana Volcano and Ladbrokes Gold Collar with Savana Ruinart.
“It really was a special day for Diane and her team,” said Rayment. “Neither Ruinart or Volcano were in any danger of losing at any stage. They won their competitions in brilliant style – and for those who’ve followed Volcano’s career victory was especially sweet.
“She’s been a top-class stayer and marathon performer for many years and I remember describing her on the day as like a fine wine getting better with age! And she helped make it a special last Cesarewitch for us here at Crayford.
“We took on the Ladbrokes Grand National from Central Park, which will be over 540m later this year, with the Cesarewitch going the other way – and Savana Volcano absolutely deserves her name to be on such a famous roll of honour.”
