KINGSBROOK GLYN landed a popular local success in the £7,500 Ladbrokes Summer Stayers Classic Final at Monmore for trainer Kevin Hutton and owners Ron Watkins and his grandson Jamie Ballard – in what was a real family success story.

Bought from Irish breeder Liam Dowling after earmarking, the May 2017 son of Droopys Sydney and Ballymac Razl – a litter brother of last year’s English Derby runner-up Ballymac Tas – was reared by part-owner Watkins in his garden before starting his career at Swindon before joining Hutton’s Burford, Oxfordshire, kennels.

“Ron clearly did a fantastic job and it’s a great story,” said winning trainer Hutton after the always-handy Kingsbrook Glyn hit the front at the third bend after Waltham Magic had led, before going on to win by four lengths from staying-on Bubbly Dave (Paul Young) in 37.66sec for the 630m.

Hutton added: “He’s always run Monmore well – and pretty much at the top level from the start whether it be 480m or 630m. Even when there was no open racing, Monmore helped us tremendously because they gave the higher-class dogs graded opportunities.

“On one night there were 11 A1s, which was perfect for a dog of his ability. He always had 480m speed but stayed well when turning handy over six bends, so it’s great to win the Summer Stayers Classic again after Airport Captain in 2014 – well done to Marc (Studer)!”

Studer is Hutton’s travelling head lad and oversaw the Hutton team’s runners on the night and was delighted to see both Southfield Code on the supporting card and Kingsbrook Glyn land their respective contests – and he is a big fan of the Summer Stayers Classic hero.

“He knows every grain of sand here at Monmore and that’s always a help in a major final. He helps himself by staying wide and is just relentless really when he’s given space and a decent position early – and when he’s on the bunny he’s not for catching.

“We tried him last year over 710m at Perry Barr which was too far, but he’s probably stronger now anyway. Either way 630m here at Monmore plays to his strengths, that middle pace of his is always great to see.

“Fair play to Eric (Bilton) who looks after him at the kennels. He’s done a tremendous job with him. He looked a picture tonight and ran a great race – and needed to given what was a great final. Well done also, of course, to the big man (Kevin Hutton) and to Ron and Jamie.”

Kingsbrook Glyn’s next target could be the Gain Greyhound Nutrition 3 Steps To Victory at Sheffield, a GBGB Category One competition, starting on September 15 – with the Star Sports & Arc Greyhound Derby still very much a possible target.

The Ladbrokes Summer Stayers Classic shared centre-stage on the night at the Wolverhampton venue with the Ladbrokes Gold Cup, two GBGB Category One competitions, chiefly supported by a brace of Category Three events for pups and sprinters.

The Carol Weatherall-trained Holdem Lauren was always in charge in the Ladbrokes.com 480 Puppy Final as the September 18 daughter of Droopys Cain and Quicksilverjemma broke in front to strike gold for owners Dave Kay and Matt Barrett in 28.33sec.

The Ladbrokes.com 264 Final went to Coolavanny Dylan for Sheffield trainer Kirsty Grayson and Kirnickco Racing after last year’s Bresmed Northern Sprint winner broke smartly from a midfield pitch and led his rivals into the turn to win in 15.23sec.
