NEW DESTINY landed her third Category One success of 2024 with an authoritative display in the bet365 Challenge Cup Final at Oxford on Saturday.

In a £10,000 decider reduced to five runners following the withdrawal of Cooladerry Dust (Nathan Hunt), New Destiny was out-trapped by Swift Giddy (Jason Gornall) but soon showed her trademark speed to edge the Towcester runner into the turn, plus crucially got first run on main market rival Queen Georgia (Liz McNair).

Thereafter, the Coral Coronation Cup and Premier Greyhound Racing Champion Stakes heroine was always in control and, while Queen Georgia valiantly kept up the pressure in behind, there was no catching the October 2021 daughter of Grangeview Ten and Coonough Dolly who went to land outright honours in style.

New Destiny crossed the line a length and three-quarters ahead of Queen Georgia and third-placed Urlee Star (David Elcock) in 38.93sec for the 650m trip. The time would be a track record but was hand-timed so is not official.

A delighted Mark Wallis, about to be named champion trainer for the 15th time, said: “I took Destiny to Oxford, with Daniel and Emily heading to Hove – and thankfully we’ve all come home to Lakenheath with the win!

“It’s a team and family effort and was special in that we’ve now won over 100 Cat One titles here at Imperial Kennels.

“I’m just delighted for everyone – from Linda (Jones, mother-in-law) who held the licence for many years, through the rest of the family and team who do such a fabulous job every day. Thanks and well done to what Mike (Davis) for us all, on and off the track.

“Destiny will be in our team for Towcester on Saturday.”

Paul Johnson, joint racing manager at Oxford, said: “What else can you say about New Destiny? She’s an absolute star who got quicker with each run, just clearing the bend ahead of Queen Georgia and didn’t see another rival thereafter.

“It was a great night for Mark (Wallis) overall. It was the first of his three Category One winners that evening and he stayed in the stadium, watching the other two winners in our paddock. I should imagine the journey home was a good one!”
