Mongys Wild extends winning streak in Regency heats
MONGYS WILD stretched his winning sequence to 11 with an impressive comeback success in the heats of the Premier Greyhound Racing Regency.
Sidelined after a cough forced his withdrawal from a planned crack at the Dorando Marathon on Derby final night, the Mark Wallis-trained winner of the Premier Greyhound Racing Golden Jacket and Time TV Trophy grabbed leader Tuono Bella (Paul Donovan) off the last bend to win heat three, stopping the clock in 41.71sec (normal) for the 695m trip.
Victory for Mongys Wild helped Wallis to a four-timer in the Regency heats which, along with success for Proper Heiress in a Coral Sussex Cup heat, made it five wins on the night for the champion trainer – who also sent out Garfiney Blaze to post the fastest Regency time in heat six as the dual Cesarewitch champion stopped the clock in 41.45sec (normal) as he also led on the run for home for a one and three-quarter length win over Art Riddler (Seamus Cahill).
Wallis kicked off his bid for a fifth Regency title by sending out Bombay Nutty to win heat one as he reeled in chief rival Breton Molly (Patrick Janssens) for a two and a half lengths win over that rival in 41.71sec (normal), while Vhagar, an impressive winner of the BetGoodwin Challenge Trophy winner on Derby final night at Towcester, made all in heat five to lead home Borna Parachute (David Mullins) by three lengths in 41.61sec (normal).
Romeo Empire earlier maintained his unbeaten record over six bends when winning heat two for Patrick Janssens in 41.56sec (normal) for the Sussex track’s six bends.
Another winner from Derby final night at Towcester over 712m – the Derby quarter-finalist’s first six-bend test – Romeo Empire made it five wins in a row once leading at the bend and stretching away for a six and a quarter lengths win over Soul Choice (Paul Marchant).
The remaining Premier Greyhound Racing Regency heat went to the Seamus Cahill-trained Ivy Hill Cherry who landed a 16-1 surprise in heat four.
One of a number of double-figure winners on the night – there were two 33-1 winners in the heats of the Coral Sussex Cup – the June 22 daughter of Droopys Sydney led off the second bend and raced away for a seven-length win over Newinn Cloud (Mark Wallis) in an smart 41.53sec (normal).
Rob Abrey, Hove’s racing manager, said: “Well done to Mark (Wallis) and his team. They had a fantastic night, especially in the Regency, with four heat winners and five runners through to the semi-finals.
“Garfiney Blaze was quickest and he’s clearly getting back to his best. He won the George Curtis and Ballyregan Bob Memorial here in December over 740m – remember that great race against Droopys Flotilla – but still has the pace to lie handy over 695m ready to pounce – and that’s exactly what he did on Saturday.
“Bombay Nutty showed his class, as did Vhagar, but the story might still be Mongys Wild. Saturday was 11 in a row and I reckon those looking for him to extend that run might be happy enough with his draw in the third semi. You fancy his chances, especially with what Mark believes is improvement to come after he had the cough.
“Romeo Empire has clearly excelled over a trip and remains unbeaten, but probably faces his stiffest six-bend test now in the semis against Vhagar. Having said that, I think however the semis pan out we’re set for a brilliant Premier Greyhound Racing Regency Final.”
