MUSTANG KAY CEE completed the perfect weekend for her trainer Carol Weatherall when completing an unbeaten run through the Bedfordshire Oaks Final at Henlow on Sunday.

Success in the Category Two event came less than 24 hours after Calico Ranger’s brilliant St Leger victory, with the big-race double for the Rugby-based handler improving her standing still further in the Trainer of the Year list.

The Sean Bourke-owned two-year-old lined up as favourite for the £2,500 decider after fluent wins in heat and semi-final, but a fast start was always essential to complete the deal – and that is exactly that she did, racing to a 3.59sec split.

Thereafter, the remainder of the field were placing catch-up, although the Kevin Hutton-trained pair of Ravenswood Flo and Bull Run Byte both ran on impressively, with the former closest at the line. The pair finished a neck and short-head behind the 27.84sec (-10) winner.

It completed a fourth straight win for the daughter of Kc And All from nine starts in the UK – all at Henlow – since arriving at Weatherall’s kennels from Bourke where she will ultimately return for breeding. Not, however, before a crack at The Oaks at Swindon.

“That’s the plan now,” said Darren Holmes, partner and assistant of the winning trainer. “Sean sends a few bitches to us for racing before they head back to him for breeding. He stood Holdem Spy (Weatherall’s Scottish Derby winner) at stud for us.

“We’ve had the likes of Mustang Chick from Sean. She reached the semi-final of the Oaks for us, and that’s where Kay Cee will be aimed at now. We’ll look for a trial for her at Swindon and take it from there.

“She’s running well and improved throughout the competition,” added Holmes. “We were concerned the track might be running too slow for her. They’d watered, and it was probably tougher out there than the going allowance tells you, so she’s done it well.”

Victory for Mustang Kay Cee followed on the heels of Calico Ranger’s victory at Perry Barr the night before and Holmes reported the sport’s newest Classic champion to be “bouncing and ready to go again” after that triumph at the Birmingham venue.

“We’re looking at the Ballyregan Bob Memorial and then perhaps, all being well, dropping him down in trip for the Olympic – Hove suits him. Again, we’ll look to take him down for a look – there’s nothing really obvious to go for, so Hove might be perfect.

“But we’ve got some time to plan. It’s just been a great weekend and the Henlow win topped it off. People mentioned to us that we’d been part of a one-two for Henlow in the St Leger, and I’m not sure that’s happened before.

“We had a few friends there yesterday, and it was great that Keith (Hardiman, Calico Ranger’s part-owner) also came down. We were always hopeful of winning, but you’ve still got to do it and thankfully she did everything right when it mattered.”
