The Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) has today published its new Enrichment Guide for Retired Greyhounds within Residential Kennels.

Developed with input from animal welfare charities on the Greyhound Forum, the Guide has been put together as part of GBGB’s long-term welfare strategy,A Good Life for Every Greyhound‘, and seeks to support retired racers who may stay in their racing kennels for part or all of their retirement.

The Guide focuses on five forms of enrichment – physical, social, nutritional, occupational and sensory – which can help support a greyhound’s retirement transition by assisting them to prepare for life as a domestic pet. This builds on the measures GBGB already has in place for retired greyhounds, including inspections by Regional Regulatory Vets and Stipendiary Stewards, which provide them with continued high levels of oversight and protection as offered to active racing greyhounds.

Tiffany Blackett, Executive Veterinarian at the Greyhound Board of Great Britain, said:

“Beyond our welfare measures during the racing years, GBGB remains committed to ensuring all retired greyhounds continue to receive the highest standards of care while accommodated in residential kennels. Our new Enrichment Guide, which has been sent to all trainers, offers a range of ideas for enrichment which we hope our trainers find both useful and practical.”

“GBGB hopes that this guidance will further support trainers to continue to provide high welfare standards for all greyhounds in their kennels.”
