New Guidance Published on the Movement of Greyhounds outside of Great Britain
GBGB has published new guidance around the movement of retired GBGB-registered greyhounds outside of Great Britain. This document sits alongside GBGB’s Responsible Homing Policy and aims to protect the welfare, safety and well-being of GBGB-registered greyhounds.
Any GBGB-licensed person or registered owner intending to transport their greyhound outside of Great Britain must contact the GBGB (welfare@gbgb.org.uk or 020 7822 0900) to request a Greyhound Export Notification Form. This form and any supporting documentation must be completed and submitted to the GBGB via email.
This includes situations whereby a greyhound is to be homed as a pet abroad, is to be temporarily or permanently relocated outside of Great Britain for breeding or to compete in regulated racing abroad as overseen by an appropriate regulatory body.
It does not apply to GBGB-registered greyhounds travelling to either Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland under Rule 84 to race as an international entry.
In completing the Greyhound Export Notification Form, the burden is on the applicant to satisfy GBGB that arrangements being made for the export of a greyhound are appropriate and adequately safeguard greyhound welfare. A completed Retirement Form for the greyhound must also be promptly sent to the GBGB following Rule 18 of the Rules of Racing.
Once the Greyhound Export Notification Form and any supporting documentation has been completed and submitted to the GBGB, the applicant must wait for an acknowledgement that the notification form has been received before the greyhound’s movement.
The GBGB strongly opposes the export of greyhounds to any jurisdiction that does not have strong animal welfare controls in place. Owners must not participate in the transfer of greyhounds to others within Great Britain when they know (or should have known) that the greyhound was subsequently to be exported outside of Great Britain.
Failure by GBGB licence holders or registered owners to satisfy the GBGB in these respects or to comply with this guidance or with the GBGB’s Responsible Homing Policy may result in disciplinary proceedings.
