Proper Heiress secures third category one title with an all the way victory in the Arena Racing Company Kent Plate final
PROPER HEIRESS is now a three-time Category One winner after producing one of the great runs at Central Park on Saturday in the Arena Racing Company Kent Plate Final.
On a night his trainer Mark Wallis was at Perry Barr winning Premier Greyhound Racing Trainers’ Judgement Night, the MWD Partnership-owned Proper Heiress produced a fantastic off-the-front performance to claim gold in the £12,500-to-the-winner decider.
Breaking smartly from his trap four pitch, the September 2022 son of Droopys Sydney and Powerful Mush was soon in pole position for the Category One spoils.
Pacing up into the lead, he was joined on the outside approaching the bend by King Jackson (Liz McNair), while the latter’s kennelmate Queen Shakira also now hit top gear into the turn, only to be crowded out as she challenged into the turn.
However, Proper Heiress (5-4JF) had stolen a march on them all, including market rival and joint-favourite March On Freddie (David Mullins), who was moderate away but also now paced up well only be be bumped wide before turning the bend in third.
Up front, Proper Heiress was now in the vanguard position and on his way to victory. March On Freddie ran on strongly to pass King Jackson and give chase to the leader, but the eventual winner was never for catching in his race against the clock.
Crossing the line in a majestic 28.47sec (-30) for the 491m trip, just two spots off Droopys Display’s best-ever set in the Premier Greyhound Racing Kent Derby Final last year, Proper Heiress’ calculated time of 28.17sec smashed the track record.
Victory secured Proper Heiress a third Category One title after wins in the Coral Olympic at Hove last year and the Ladbrokes Winter Derby at Monmore in February.
A delighted Mark Wallis, reflecting on the victory at Central Park and the kennel’s success on Trainers’ Judgement Night at Perry Barr, was delighted with Proper Heiress and very much has the Star Sports/TRC English Greyhound Derby on the agenda.
However, a crack at the Time Greyhound Nutrition Juvenile Championship over the same C&D at Towcester might also be on the cards, said the 15-time champion trainer.
“We’ll definitely have a look because it’s a fantastic prize which has been put up,” said Wallis. “There’s talk of Bockos Diamond, Wicky Ned and March On Freddie going for it – all brilliant dogs. I’d like to think we can take them all on, but we’ll see.”
On Proper Heiress, Wallis added: “He just seems to have everything. He starts well, stays well and does plenty in the middle too – so, when he leads like he did at Central Park, he’s proving himself right up there with the best I’ve had.
“It was a good race at Central Park, but he ran it perfectly, and thanks to Daniel (Wallis) and Liam (Aspin) for looking after him down there. They did a great job!”
Wallis himself was at Perry Barr for a fifth Trainers’ Judgement Night/Trainers’ Championship victory, landing the spoils without a leg in the six-race shootout.
“It’s a team game I suppose – and that team did us proud on Saturday at Perry Barr and at Central Park. Thank-you to the sponsors at both venues and thanks to my own team, too.”
