BULL RUN BUTTON will attempt to be a rare bitch winner of the Star Sports English Derby after landing trainer Barrie Draper a record fifth Racing Post Juvenile title at Sheffield on Tuesday.

Season-permitting, a crack at Towcester was announced as the main target for the March 2016 whelp, a daughter of one of Draper’s Juvenile winners in the outstanding Ballymac Eske who won the prestigious one-off in 2013. Im Okay (1999), Eden Star (2012) and Ballymac Ramsey (2016) complete the list of other Draper-trained winners of the Juvenile.

Breaking well and holding her position from the pressing Droopys Expert at the bend, Bull Run Button turned the second bend behind Oaks champion Wuheida, but stayed on just the stronger to pick up Philip Simmonds’ runner close home to land the £5,000 prize for the owning BAT Syndicate in 28.86sec (-30) for the 500m trip. Droopys Expert finished third, with the front trio clear.

“She needed every metre of that 500m, but it’s great to see another Juvenile – especially here at Sheffield,” said trainer Draper afterwards. “I always thought if she broke well and held her position at the bend she’d have a chance, and that’s how it’s panned out. She’s improving with every run, and I suppose we don’t know still how good she’ll be.”

Trevor Draper added: “I spotted her in Ireland where she was showing good strength but had been unlucky in trap draws. We bought her as a six-bend bitch, but Barrie has worked his magic and made her a four-bend bitch! She might have been more forward than one of two of the others – she’s now had four races this year.

“But she’s definitely got something about her, and it’s great to win the trophy in Yorkshire in front of a good local crowd who’ve supported us for many years – and it’s nice to keep the trophy in Yorkshire! We’ll let her trial at Towcester and take her chance, and maybe think about stiffer tests later in the year.”

Dave Perry, Sheffield general manager, said: “It was great to host such a prestigious race as the Racing Post Juvenile and for a home trainer to win it, in what was a quality-filled renewal, was fantastic. The race really was an excellent advertisement for greyhound racing in general, and hopefully we’ll be asked to stage the race again next year. It’d be a pleasure.

Tuesday night at Sheffield include heats of the Molson Coors Queen Mother Cup over 660m which were won by Patrick Janssens Affleck Lady (39.16sec – 40), Hayley Keightley’s Huarache Madison (38.87sec) and Kevin Ferguson’s Acomb Ruby 39.44sec.

Trap draw for Sunday’s all-railer final: 1 Minnies Highway, 2 Acomb Ruby, 3 Sidarian Blu Ray, 4 Huarache Madison, 5 Swift Marvelette, 6 Affleck Lady.
