BROOKSIDE RICHIE added his name to a famous roll of honour when landing the JenningsBet Select Stakes at Nottingham on Monday.

The prestigious £10,000-to-the-winner one-off had a new sponsor this year in JenningsBet, who also backed the JenningsBet Puppy Classic and JenningsBet Select Stayers in an impressive triple-header of major races at the Colwick Park venue.

Landing a first Select Stakes for Newcastle trainer Jimmy Fenwick, Brookside Richie added this latest big-race success to his Juvenile Classic (Towcester) and Puppy Cup (Romford) victories last year for owner Richie Vickers.

Fenwick, who is now eyeing a tilt at the Sunderland Classic before Newcastle’s All England Cup with Brookside Richie, told the Racing Post’s Jim Cremin he still has Classic hopes for the October 2019 son of Droopys Sydney and Droopys Greatest.

He said: “This is a Derby dog. He’s still lightly raced but wasn’t quite right to go for Towcester this time – you need to be 100 per cent for that.”

Nottingham general manager David Evans congratulated winning connections and was delighted how Monday’s evening of top-class racing panned out.

He said: “It was one of those nights that make all the effort worthwhile. The card looked great and didn’t disappoint. We had owners and trainers turn up all looking to have a good time and we had some very worthy winners.

“Having the Select Stakes and the Select Stayers fields decided so close to the event caused its own headaches, but seeing everything come together on the evening was fantastic.

“Distant Podge in the Puppy Classic, Savana Ruinart in the Select Stayers and Brookside Richie in the Select Stakes all ran great races and were a credit to their owners and trainers and, although they saw off a few local competitors, you can’t be too upset when the races were that good.

“We had a good crowd downstairs and every table in the restaurant was booked so the atmosphere was superb.

“JenningsBet added some extra touches to the night which were very well received. Having two professional darts players challenge the punters gave additional entertainment to the evening and the sponsors also gave £50 to the best-turned-out dog in each race on the card which was a nice touch and well received by the trainers.

“It’s those sorts of extras that make me glad we’ll have them sponsoring the event for a few years to come and the support they have offered from start to finish has been amazing.

“I hope everyone enjoyed their night as much as I did and hopefully everyone will join us again in November for the Eclipse.”
