Ricky Holloway at the double with littermates Razldazl Amanda and Dazl Rolex in Gold Collar opening round
CRAYFORD trainer Ricky Holloway landed a notable double with a pair of littermates as the Ladbrokes Gold Collar kicked off with six heats of the GBGB Category One competition over 540m on Saturday.
Holloway, well known for his success with hurdlers, struck in the heats of the weekend’s major event on the flat at the Kent track with Razldazl Amanda and then Dazl Rolex, both just out of puppy status, timing it right for supporters in their respective eliminators.
First up was Razldazl Amanda as a first-bend lead set up a one and three-quarter lengths success over Havana Top Note (Liz McNair) and Aayamza Sydney (John Mullins), with the
November 21 daughter of Superior Panama and Razldazl Mya posting 33.42sec (+30) for the six-bend course.
Dazl Rolex later completed a family double in heat five when turning in a pitch before wearing down longtime leader Bolt Of Wisdom (Jim Reynolds) close home for a half-length success over that rival and Harehareherechoo (Tommy Batchelor). The winning time was 33.71sec (+30).
Fastest of the heat winners – and most popular success on the day – was Laughill Jess’s 33.60sec (+30) all-the-way victory in heat three as Dave Lee’s prolific-scoring runner notched up a 15th straight win at Crayford.
A remarkable haul, sandwiched between a crack at the Premier Greyhound Racing Oaks at Perry Barr, a fast start from the May 2021 daughter of Out Of Range ASB and Laughil Irene set up a four-length win over running-on Coonough Crow (Mark Wallis) and Naney Jezabelle (Keith Robins).
Havana Lover, the 2022 St Leger winner, continued her fine form at Crayford when following up last week’s prep race win by dominating from the get-go outside and racing away for a six-length win from Caumrue Lemon (Tony Collett) and Dazl Omega (Ricky Holloway) in 33.45sec (+30).
Andy Slater was on the mark in heat four with Dapper Mac as the August 2021 son of Droopys Sydney and Mustang Jill continued his fine run by coming through an early battle with Makeit Magical (Frank Gray) before drawing clear for a two and three-quarter lengths success over Moaning Rossi (Darren Whitton) and Warzone Tom (Liz McNair), the 2022 Gold Collar winner, in 33.57sec (+30).
The remaining heat saw Golden Jacket finalist Minnie Bullet make a successful return to Crayford with success in heat six as Mark Wallis’s runner was soon handy alongside fast-starting Billis Blazer (Andy Slater) before hitting the front off the third bend on her way to a length and a half win over King Ezra (Liz McNair) and Gutsy Jet (Kevin Boon).
The winner, a January 2021 daughter of Good News and Moanduff Daisy, clocked 33.49sec (+30).
Danny Rayment, Crayford racing manager, said: “It was a cracking morning’s racing and, as we’ve come to expect with the Ladbrokes Gold Collar, there was plenty of class on show.
“Overall, it was impressive to see all four of Liz McNair’s entries qualify, including their 2022 champion Warzone Tom – he’s such a cracking sort still and a real credit to connections.
“Local interest was also very much to the fore, particularly with Laughil Jess managing to extend her unbeaten record over the distance to 15 races – what a superb achievement. Ricky Holloway also flew the flag for the locals with an excellent double, although I’m not sure how Razldazl Amanda managed to get in an S2!
“Finally, John Mullins often goes close in the Gold Collar and Aayamza Sydney showed his battling qualities after early bother to make the semi-finals, but John will also now have Dapper Mac in his team after Andy Slater confirmed he’s joining John now after his fine heat victory.”
