RPGTV English Puppy Derby – Towcester 500m – £10,000
MAKE NOISE landed Hove trainer Seamus Cahill back-to-back victories in the event – and a third in all – when taking the £10,000 RPGTV Puppy Derby Final at Towcester on Sunday.
Following Rayvin Giovanni’s win at Wimbledon in 2010 and Surprising’s success 12 months ago, Make Noise was supported into 15-8 for the 500m showpiece with Kevin Hutton’s Signet Denver, the only unbeaten runner in the four-round competition, going off favourite for this latest GBGB Category One feature.
The start always looked crucial with the market rivals drawn side by side in the midfield – and so it proved. Trapping smartly, Make Noise paced up well into the turn and held the challenge of Signet Denver on his outside. Moving off at the turn but maintaining the lead, he straightened up to kick clear and never looked likely to be caught.
The 36-kilo January 2020 son Confident Rankin and Tibet thereafter kept up the gallop all the way to the line, the Cahill youngster winning by one and a half lengths from the fast-finishing Callmesteve (John Mullins) and Skywalker Forte (Ted Soppitt). The winning time for the 500m was 29.71sec (normal).
Teresa Cahill, wife of the winning trainer, said: “Once he broke well and led up you always felt he was in a good position – and you fancied your chances. He’s a strong-running sort and has done us really proud.
“We’ve actually not had him long. The final was only his sixth race – two in Ireland and four here now – and we got him qualified pretty quickly so he could run in this.
“He moved off at the turn, but is still learning the game and is quite a big dog, too. He’s got plenty of learning and developing to do, but Seamus plans to give him a few weeks off and then we’ll maybe have a look at the Winter Derby at Monmore.”
Make Noise is owned by Keylight Hire Ltd and Steve Hughes and Alex Hambi were on hand to collect the trophy.
Hambi said: “I’m not sure either of us can quite believe it. It was only six weeks ago I took a call from Seamus who told me I had two hours to make my mind up on a dog he’d been recommended and seen. So I had a look at his two races at Cork – he won them both – phoned Seamus back and said yes, thankfully.
“To be honest it’s been a Seamus masterclass from the start to winning the Puppy Derby today – and hopefully there’s more to come. He will handle that first bend at Towcester better the more experience he gets, but what a fantastic start and he’s hopefully going to give us plenty of fun moving forward.”
