HAVANA CLASS set a new track record for the two-bend trip at Towcester on Saturday when winning the RPGTV Watling Street Sprint Final.

One of a host of GBGB Category Two events on the night, the Liz McNair-trained and KSS Syndicate-owned runner, who has just turned two years of age, added another big-race success to his Laurels victory at Perry Barr in April with a supreme show of early speed.

Breaking smartly in the 270m final, Havana Class never looked in danger as the July 19 son of World Class and Havana Lottie raced away to score a two-and-three-quarter length success over Skipalong Sarge (Patricia Cowdrill) in 15.45sec (normal), a new best for the distance.

The victory completed a double on the night for the McNairs after Queen Beyonce signed off a brilliant career with victory in the opening senior’s contest, the Bob Betts Memorial Trophy over 500m, staged in honour of the late Greyhound Life editor.

Led by Great Eastern (Kevin Hutton) to the third bend, the 2019 Derby semi-finalist, produced a cracking back-straight surge to hit the front on the outside of her rival before going on to score by just over a length from Maysthistlecrack (Pam Dolby) in 29.71sec (-10).

Of the kennel’s two winners, Rab McNair, husband of trainer Liz, said: “That tops off a brilliant night and I’m delighted for Brendan (Keogh) and the boys. It’s great we can be part of these big nights and well done to Kevin (Boothby) for bringing the atmosphere back!

“Havana Class was just brilliant and he’s proving a great dog for the lads. That’s two competitions now and he was still a pup a couple of weeks back!

“But that’s it for Queen Beyonce. She’s been a great bitch for us and breeding is very much now the plan for her,” confirmed McNair of the home-bred February 2017 daughter of Eden The Kid and Skate On.

Detroit landed GBGB Category Two success on the night for trainer John Mullins and owner Chris Waters as the 18-1 outsider was quickly away and dominated proceedings to lift the £3,000 The Madri Excepcional Cup Final over 500m.

The September 2018 son of Kinloch Brae and Alice My Angel was never headed as he crossed the line a length clear of the running-on Blue Tick George (Jim Daly) in 29.59sec.

The David Elcock-owned and trained Getwiththetimes produced a strong-running effort to win the greyhoundtrader.com Stakes over 500m, a race for greyhounds purchased from the sponsor’s sales.

The April 2019 daughter of Droopys Cain and Precious Story struck in 29.96sec (-10), leading off the final bend to lead home Chelms Prince (Nathan Hunt) and Savana Domino (Gary Griffiths).
