Seasoned performer Signet Goofy runs unbeaten through BGBF Truframe British Bred Champion Stakes
SIGNET GOOFY emulated litter sister Moments Of Magic’s success the previous year when winning the BGBF Truframe British Bred Champion Stakes Final at Towcester on Saturday.
The GBGB Category Two event supported the Star Sports/TRC English Greyhound Derby Final and provided a popular winner in the shape of the John Mullins-trained, Lee Calcutt and Chris Waters-owned three-year-old.
A Derby semi-finalist 12 months ago, Signet Goofy made the third round of the Classic this year but then ran unbeaten through the British Bred Champion Stakes with a series of front-running performances to take the £3,000 prize.
Breaking level with his field in the 500m showpiece, Signet Goofy unleashed his customary burst of early pace to lead his field at the turn and was never headed as the January 2020 son of Magical Bale and Forest Natalee quickened clear.
A product of a champion dam line, Signet Goofy landed another major trophy for this hugely successful Kevin Hutton-bred litter which includes the likes of Signet Otis, Signet Denver, Sleek By Design and, of course, 2022 winner Moments Of Magic.
Saturday’s competition for British-breds was again jointly sponsored by leading breeder David Firmager’s company and the British Greyhound Breeders’ Forum – and BGBF chair Liz Mort was on hand to present the trophy to connections of Signet Goofy.
Mort said: “What a fantastic final and conclusion to a great competition. Signet Goofy ran a terrific race to take the trophy, so congratulations to him and his connections, and well done once again to breeder Kevin Hutton for this outstanding litter.
“It has produced so many stars, many of which have featured in our British-bred races over the last year or so, including Goofy, of course, who has been prominent in both standard distance and sprint events.
“He won our Midlands Sprint Trophy at Nottingham last March, then took the Category One Steel City Cup at Sheffield in October.
“Congratulations to all the finalists in our competition. Gilbert Anderson’s Singalong Stacey tried hard to catch Goofy and came in a gallant second, while one of Goofy’s litter sisters, the Westwell Club’s Westwell Emer, was a good third. All of them deserved to be in a final on Derby Final night.
“A big thank-you to David Firmager who co-sponsors this competition with us. He is having so much well-deserved success with dogs he’s bred and is always the first to put something back into the sport.
“Overall, it was a great night for British-breds as the Firmagers’ Romeo Command ran a fantastic race to finish runner-up in the Derby itself and our BGBF Oaks and Derby champion Fabulous Azurra – a litter sister of last year’s Derby winner Romeo Magico – won the Champion Bitch Stakes.
“We also had Savana Top Cat winning the Greyhoundtrader.com Stakes Final for Chris Hamblin and owner Kevin Boothby. He was originally Romeo Top Cat and was bred by the Firmagers.
“Enormous congratulations go to the Towcester team, led by Kev Boothby, who has once again produced a fantastic Derby competition, culminating in a really great final on a night that was a real celebration of the greyhound and greyhound racing!”
