SHOCKWAVE AMBER completed an unbeaten run through the event when running away with the BGBF British Bred Scurry at Crayford on Saturday
On a busy day for the Kent venue, having earlier staged a gala card including the Premier Greyhound Racing Golden Jacket Final, it was the turn of the British-breds to strut their stuff in the first running of the two-round GBGB Category Two competition at the track – and it was the Kim Gooding-owned, bred and trained star who grabbed gold.
Having proven too strong for Ballyoak Elvis (Ricky Holloway) in the heats, Shockwave Amber this time paced up to lead at the bend, riding a bump at the turn, before stretching clear to win by five and three-quarter lengths in 23.37sec (+10) for the 380m trip.
Once again it was the locally trained Ballyoak Elvis (King Elvis-Ballyoak Badger, July 20) who chased home the December 2019 daughter of Droopys Sydney and Southoe Silver, with the David Mullins-trained Think Again (King Elvis-Swabys Luciejane, April 21) crossing the line just a head behind in third.
Liz Mort, chair of the British Greyhound Breeders Forum, was on hand to welcome connections at the presentation podium and said: “Congratulations to Kim Gooding and Dan Wiepen with their home-bred, owned and trained Shockwave Amber for her decisive win in the British Bred Scurry.
“She had some crowding with Ballyoak Elvis and Think Again to overcome, but once clear of them, opened up and finished impressively clear. Dan said afterwards the distance at Crayford had proved just right for her – she’s a quick bitch with lots of early pace, although doesn’t quite last the full standard distance.
“She’s known as Marilyn at home and is by Droopys Sydney out of Dilys Steels’s Southoe Silver. The dam line goes back five generations of British breeding, mainly by Dilys and Richard Devenish, but starting with a litter bred by Terry Dartnall in 1996.
“Congratulations to all the finalists at Crayford. It was a good competition with some new names involved in the line-up, which is always encouraging, and I hope we see them competing again in more of our British-bred events.
“Crayford was a new venue for us but we liked the 380m distance for a Scurry. Having had the Golden Jacket gala in the morning, I wasn’t expecting it to be busy in the evening, but the place was packed and buzzing, a great advert for the sport!
“Our thanks to the team there for putting it on for us. We’re already looking at dates for the next one and, as this was well supported as a two-round comp, we’ll be looking at making it three rounds next time, with the first three going through each round.
“Thanks once again to SIS for their continued support, which is enabling us to run this series of Category Two events.”
